Connection probs with LimeWire and OSX 10.3.8

I just bought limewire 4.8.1 pro today for my iBook G4 1.33 GHz PowerPC with Mac OSX 10.3.8

My problem is that although all the firewalls are off, I just can't get connected to LimeWire. The Safari window pops up no problem but- in the botom left hand corner- the connection status is permanently at "Connecting..." no matter how long yopu leave it.

could anyone help?

Thanks

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. Are you networked or sharing same router?
2. What firewalls you have?
3. ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

Hi thanks for the quick reply :)

I'm not inept but I'm not hugely technical so bear with me, I'll answer best I can :)

1) Networked, I am running off an ethernet connection on my school network...other people use Ares and Limewire without probs so its not an issue of school blocking it, we are regulated through internet disconnection when we download over a certain amount

2) I currently have my firewally running with everything enabled except Gnutella/Limewire, but it makes no difference even if I (eek!) switch my firewall off

3) 512

4) 27 G available
5) Broadband

well I've already answered those I guess, don't have my own broadband modem obviously, or my own isp providerk, it is my university.

Limewire 4.8.1, java 1.4.2_05

First use of LW but have used similar programs without probs..:( I just was craving one song heh

Schools I'm not sure about. Might be wise to ask those who use LW there whether they use any special settings. You could try manual port forward: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

If all else fails try a proxy: A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 & 2 which has a link to alternative instructions.

People with launching problems see Sticky in mac osx forum section.

nick112 have you configured your OSX firewall to allow LW full access, see: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

You might try changing the ports LW uses or/& forward a port (open a port.) LW Prefs>Advanced>Firewalls. For port forwarding see: http://www.portforward.com/netopia/Cayman3300.htm (these are for windows version but use same principle or see manual to your device.) But you must set up a Static ip 1st for this to work. So the steps are: 1. Set up a Static ip. 2. Forward a port. 3. Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. The default port for LW is 6346 but this can be changed to something else. If it is changed then listening port, any port forwarding & any firewall clearance should allow the new port no.

Some devices require rebooting after such changes but I don't know about yours.
