Default Basic vewrsion crashes on startup

Howdy,

I'm trying to be a new user, but no luck. LimeWire's installer said it installed successfully, but the app crashes at startup (during "Loading HTML Engine")

G4 Mac, 350mHz, 512mb RAM, OS 10.3.9

Any Help appreciated,
Ken N.

hmmm, i've got exactly the same problem using OSX 10.3.9, powerPC G4 1Ghz, 1GB DDR SDRAM...

But i guess, it doesn't have anything to do with the system.. I think, there's a fault in the javascript or something... I hope we'll get some help soon...

Default Try this

EDIT: The below steps should not be necessary for LW versions 4.9.25 and later. LW 4.9.25 beta ships with the JavaApplicationStub from OS X 10.2.7. If you're a LW Pro user, there is also a Pro version of the beta. Of cousre, if you're reeding this a long time after this edit, the official version of LW may also be 4.9.25 or later.
/EDIT:

The problem seems to stem from LW shipping with the JavaApplicationStub from OS X 10.1. For some people, this stub causes LW to crash while creating the user's LW preferences directory.

The easiest solution is to manually replace

/Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/LimeWire

with a copy of

/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub

I've edited the following instructions to use the GUI instead of the command line:

The easiest way to do this if you're not familiar with the OS X command line is the following.

(1) Go to Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Frameworks -> JavaVM.framework -> Versions -> Current -> Resources -> MacOS

(2) Now control-click JavaApplicationStub and select "copy 'JavaApplicationStub'".

(3) Next go to Macintosh HD -> Applications -> LimeWire

(4) Control-click on the LimeWire application and select "Show Package Contents"

(5) Go to Contents -> MacOS

(6) Control-click inside the MacOS folder and select "Paste item".

(7) Inside the MacOS folder, rename LimeWire to OldLimeWire and then rename JavaApplicationStub to LimeWire

If you're familiar with the OS X command line, this can be done in one step. However, it can be very confusing if your'e not used to the command line.

My bad; I should have posted how to do this through the GUI. I've edited my previous post to reflect this.

First of all, there should be a space between JavaApplicationStub and /Applications.

Secondly, you left off the final s on Applications.

Third, the OS X command line is case-sensitive and you didn't capitalize LimeWire properly.

You should have 3 things in one command, each seperated by a space
(1) cp

(2) /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub

(3) /Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/LimeWire

So bringing it all together, if you can stretch your streen wide enough and stretch your terminal wide enough, it should look like one line with two spaces in it:
cp /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub /Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/MacOS/LimeWire

Cool

Thanks, kmag. Had the same problem -- was getting an "unexpectedly quit" error on startup on my G4 (OS 10.3.9). Your suggestion did the trick!!

Wow. It worked!

I've been trying to figure out a solution to this problem for about three weeks, and NOTHING has been working. I was getting ready to put on some purple galoshes and do a rain dance in my office. You're a life saver.
