external modem help needed! ok...before i tear the rest of my hair out i thought i would turn to these great forums for help! i have a mac laptop (the toilet seat cover one) with OSX 10.3.9 and Roxio Toast 6.0.7. For some reason it will not recognize my external burner. It says No Recorder Found. When I click on it, it briefly says "scanning" in red but then goes back to No Recorder Found. I do notice that when I hit the Copy Tab at the top is says "read from built in DVD-Rom" but does not give me any option to change that. I don't know if that's part of the problem but thought I would mention it. Any help greatly appreciated!! |

What brand & model is your burner? And as Only A Hobo asked, is it USB or Firewire? I can tell you one thing, Toast has had other updates since 6.0.7 so the program itself might not recognise the new burner. The last update I'm aware of is 6.1.1 (see http://www.roxio.com/en/support/toas...pdatesv6.jhtml ) Is yours the full version or Lite version? Also, you might need to use patchburn (click on link) to get the OS & osx apps to recognise it.

I have no idea if it's USB or Firewire..how do I tell? (and yes, I AM a moron when it comes to computers, as you can probably tell!!) The burner I have is old..it's a Hewlett Packard CD Writer Plus 8200 series. I downloaded the Patch thing..but the minute I click on it to run it, is says "CD burner not found". AGH!! |

My experience was that anything that worked on OS9 was unlikely to work on OSX. They could be run under classic, but That proved to be atotal waste of time in general. This should not apply to an external devise but I do have a feeling in your case that you should try a firewire connection, rather than USB as you need power out through the connecting cable to your burner I suspect and usb, as LOTR explained, on older macs is pretty useless when power is required. |

"I do have a feeling in your case that you should try a firewire connection, rather than USB as you need power out through the connecting cable to your burner I suspect and usb, as LOTR explained, on older macs is pretty useless when power is required" how do i switch to a firewire connection? do i have to contact my internet company? thanks for all your help everyone...as stated before, i'm pretty useless in this department. |

I'm suggesting you connect the Burner to your computer with a cable that goes into the firewire socket on your computer rather that the usb socket. You may need to buy a cable to do this. A usb socket has a sort of threepointed arrow symbol(all pointing in the same direction. A firewire socket has A symbl like a 3 pointed X I /\ sort of. I don't think we yet know which socket your burner does plug into. So no need to contact your isp ... we are not talking about your internet connection, just the connection of computer to burner. |
