Actually i just tried it again and it doesnt seem to be freezing my other apps this time... its just not letting me use limewire very well.

Now LW seems to freeze or pause for quite a long time before it will continue to search/download... then it will start working again..

The good thing now is that i dont have the beachball up and can use my other apps which is much better!!

We seem to be making progress!!!!!!!!!

Actually i lie... the beachball has just popped up.

tho i must say... LW is working much better...

Only once over the last half an hour has the beachball shown its ugly face ...which means i cannot use any apps for about 10 seconds... then all goes back to normal..

LW seems to working resonably ok apart from the pauses happening every now and then - These pauses only effect LW not the other apps.. still a little frustrating

Well my patience has just about ran out... it still freezes other apps for long periods of time....

Just about ready to give up... look forward to seeing what your expert friend thinks of the issue tomorrow...

A couple of suggestions that may or may not help. Reinstall your Java using the "Offline" installer: Java 1.4.2 for Tiger (click on link)

2. Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption

3. After opening LW, let it settle for 10-25+ mins before using. Allowing it to load incompletes, shared files, & allowing it time to attempt to connect to each incomplete one by one.

Don't use the Resume/Find Sources function on all your files. If you use it, apply it to just one to a few at a time. This function does have side-FX & uses up a lot of LW's resources & can use up a lot of your OS's resources.

It's also been suggested that only keeping the Search/Downld window open & only opening the other windows when needed helps to reduce VM build up. Other similar things to do are to set your uploads & downlds for auto-clear, close old searches that have been there for many hrs (ie: don't allow too many search tabs to accumulate).

Perhaps also, go to LW's Preferences->Speed & tick Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities.

You might also consider this Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! which can give LW a fresh breath of new life.

Well almost suggested everything. lol Perhaps, delete your LW preferences whilst LW is "closed". The LW preferences file is called Limewire & is found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

BTW I've a suspicion you're a local going by your time of responses. That's south of new york but west & east of south africa.

(Whoops! Sorry ... just jokin')

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...java+and+tiger I think OAHB is thinking of the online installation or OS updates issues. But Stief's suggestion about Java 1.5 sounds very good!

the experts won't be online until tomorrow--so I'll try and get them to take a look here then.

In the meantime . . .

--Setting up a new admin user account and installing there is a way to check iif the problem is in the home account, or with the system

--with the latest java update for Tiger, you can tell the system whether to use java 1.4 or 1.5 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301073

You can change the preferred Java version for applications and applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.
I've been using 1.5, and I'm not getting the gui slowdowns any more. Check your "about LimeWire" box to see which version of java you are using
