Angry 4.9 Freezes all my apps, not comp-savvy

I have osx 10.3.9, and one day I restarted my computer to find an updated version of limewire (4.9 basic) somehow on there, opening at startup. I do not know how it got on there. I can't find the old version. Every time I open it, it will freeze itself and other apps. I have tried opening up space on the hardrive, restarting in "Safe Boot" mode or whatever it is, and downloading all the updated java and security software. Nothing has worked so far. Can someone help me or show me to the thread that adresses this?
Thank you!

ps- I'm a little annoyed b/c I didn't download this update and was perfectly happy with the old version. How did that happen?
