Apple Techs tell me to dump limewire? I had to take my dualcore in for a quick fix today and the techs at the Apple store told me to dump limewire. They say it leaves corrupted files all over the machine and will eventually slow it down to a hault. Each time I talk to a tech they tell me the same thing. What gives? Surely they are not talking about the leftover crap in my incomplete folder? I usually just delete that stuff every few days. Is there a hugh vat of these terrible "corrupted files" hiding somewhere on my machine that I need to know about? I did have to reformat my powerbook g4 recently due to it coming to a S L O W crawl. Is this what they are referring to? Is limewire the cause? |

Apple isn't spamming with iPod ads, some other spammer do it. Apple techies are WRONG saying that LW leaves junk on your computer. The only thing they could complain is that LW uses extensively the HD and can shorten the life of the disk. Beside that, some users do tend to install bad apps that decrease the OS efficienty, but that's not LW related. I think that Apple is most afraid of possible pirating of its own of software that might happen on LW. That being said, Apple techies are wrong, either because they don't know or are biased. Installing kernel extensions with cameras, mices and printers are much more obstrusive of the OS and can result in crashes much more than LW itself

Well, I do believe that Apple is biased somewhat. But...I was having problems after prolonged use of Limewire (mainly frequent app crashes, OS crashes, USB problems, etc); while periodicaly clearing the temp incomplete files and restarting every day and weekly permission maintnence and disk utility runs. I took it in to Apple, they said dump Limewire. I finally had to re-install the OS, and now I've started using Limewire again after not using it a while, and I'm starting to get the same problems. So, I think Limewire IS at fault here, at least somewhat. I'm on a Powerbook G4 with a gig of ram using 10.4.4. Any way the people who make Limewire could, you know actualy look into this; instead of just saying Apple techies are a bunch of biased idiots? |

As being one using LimeWire and FrostWire on a constant basis (including betas, versions I compile myself and all), I really don't know how LW could ever slow down your machine or play with your settings. The problems must be through the files you download from LW and then install on your computer. True, LW sometimes corrupt his own preferences, but it can't simply play on other directories. Anyhow, Apple technies are WRONG on that matter, they should know better as techies. If LW was playing with kernel extensions and drivers, I could understand how it could interfer with the OS. If a Java app like LW interfer with an OS, its the OS engineers that should solve their OS specific problem. Mind you, I'm an os x user, and I don't blame Apple for the os I love, but their Java implementation is subpar and troublesome and could account for performance degradation. LW? No. Ciao

it must be the software we install? That cannot be our issue. We have never downloaded a program that would need to be installed. I do appreciate all of the info on this matter but so far everyone that I have personally asked said they had an issue using it. I guess I will have to see what happens with the current install on my powerbook. So far nothing..... The biggest thing I keep hearing is to get a disk defrag program. |
