On this page (http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml) there are instructions for configuring an OS X firewall. Maybe that worked on early versions, but it doesn't apply to 10.4.

The instructions say:

OS X FIREWALL:

To open the OS X Firewall for Gnutella access, please do the following:

1. Open up 'System Preferences'
2. In 'Internet & Network', open 'Sharing'.
3. Select the 'Firewall' tab (your Firewall should be on)
4. Select 'New...'
5. From the 'Port Name' drop down box, select 'Gnutella/LimeWire'
6. Select 'OK'
7. Restart your LimeWire application.


When I go the the Firewall preference pane, and click new, there is NO Gnutella/Limewire option, nor any other P2P option. I can create a new one, but I'd need to know what to put in the TCP and UDP boxes.

If it's not listed then yes, you add Gnutella/Limewire. It does sound as though Tiger has new firewall settings. I'd suggest port 6346 for both UDP & TCP in the same way you'd do it if you needed to forward a port on a router. Yes-the preset setting for LimeWire/Gnutella (6346) is not present in Panther and Tiger on my machines.

Looks like Jaguar is the last OS X to have the preset. That means the LW help page and Tip of the Day need to be updated.

No matter--it's easy to create the setting as LOTR has kindly shown.

Actually, the setting isn't even necessary as it looks like the OS X Firewall is "Off" by default. The setting is only needed when the user turns the Firewall "On."

Could others check? Is the Firewall turned "On" or "Off" by default, and which systems have the preset "LimeWire/Gnutella (6346)"?

My firewall was off by default. And for some reason, gnutella/limewire automatically showed up on my list. Only A Hobo says it did for him too. But I've upgraded from Puma thru to Panther so I don't know if that makes any difference. Tiger's defaults might be different.

I don't remember if mine was on or off by default, but It was one of the first things I made sure was enabled when setting up my new computer with Tiger, and I always leave it on.

The OS X firewall seems to work flawlessly. I've never had a single issue with it. I've never needed to open ports or anything. I've tried creating open ports for my P2P apps, but my connection speeds weren't affected at all, so I went back to the default settings.
