Default protocol & other specs? (adsl disruption when starting limewire)

hello. since about two weeks, whenever i start my limewire (latest version, otherwise running fine, machine running 10.4.4.), my internet connetion immediately stops working: browsing web sites as well as using my mail client no longer works. any explanations? otherwise, i think i should check with my provider, but for that sake it would be good to know some tec details, like what kind of protocol does limewire use. i guess i should mention that once i start up limewire, it's actually the adsl connection that stops working, not my computer: i can tell, because i have a router with two independent machines (the other one running winxp) and the connection stops for both of them. (i might add that this problem does not occur when using limewire on the pc, which is why i'm turning to the macosx forum).
