Default Acceptable speed?

I have a 1.2 GHz PowerPC iBook G4 with 512 MB of ram. I'm running OsX 10.3.9, Java version 1.4.2_09 and Limewire Pro version 4.10.9.
My connection speed is supposed to be 512 kbps through a cable modem.
What download speed (roughly speaking) should I reasonable expect assuming a good stock of available hosts and assuming my ISP isn't throttling P2P traffic (which I have yet to establish).
Because I'm guessing it should be a good deal more than the 15KBpS I'm getting on a good day.
I have tried many a tweak and hint and I'm going nuts. All pointers, especially as to the sort of speeds I should expect with my set up, very gratefully received. Thanks in advance

I had the exact same problems. Some of the greates improvements for me were:

1) Going back to version 4.9.37 - after this version there is a very good chance for a Java/QuickTime 7.0.4 conflict that slows you down.
2) Reset modem about 5 minutes after you start LW (check thread 'Need for speed')
3) Do not download more than 10-15 files at once, if you have some awaiting sources, better to get rid of them and search for them again later, after you finished downloading your other files. Don't let your list get long.
4) Keep your library (or incomplete) list of files to a low (I keep mine at 35-45 max).

After these I am getting a FULL bandwith load speed. I too was at about 10-20 kbps and the above helped me to get back to full speed.

Default Thanks

Thank you for the reply.
I have already tried almost all of what you suggest with the exception of using an earlier version of Limewire. I have only very recently purchased Pro, so can I go back to using an older version which predates my purchase?

I certainly do... but most of the files I want are only shared by one person, and I am governed by thir upload speed, as you are. I seldom find a single host that I can exceed 15KBps from. It might be worth checking what d/l speed you are actually getting at a site like http://www.dslreports.com/stest where you can get this measured. and also try downloading a file from http://magnetmix.com/ and see what speed that gives you. But always remember your speed is dependant on the upload speed of the other host. It is also possible that your isp is keeping p2p use throttled to a degree, and that is something they will not freely admit to....
Hobo, I think you're suffering from the same problem so many of us do (or did). If I get some good connections from 8+ hosts I get download speeds of 100 to sometimes 150 kb/s (and that's the limit of my DSL).

Give a it a try to some of what I described above. Especially going back to version 4.9.37 (or below) and resetting the modem performed magics for me.

Default Thanks again

Hmmm...many interesting things to try and I'll give them all a shot.
Any thoughts on the likelihood of me being able to get an older version of Pro despite only being a recent purchaser?
It is so frustrating seeing only 10 or so kbps trickling in from 10 hosts - I appreciate the attempts to straighten things out.
Cheers

Yeah Easterhay, get 4.9.37, 4.9.4 is where all the troubles begin.

I too can send you 4.9.37 if you can't reach Hobo.
