Installing Limewire on Intel-based Mac Laptop

After installing Limewire [4.10] on my MacBook (Intel-based) laptop, it won't even launch. The icon bounces ion the dock, then it stops.

SOLUTION FOUND:
Although I wish Tech Support would have replied with this VERY easy fix, I found it here:
http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml

I was using an earlier version. I downloaded LW 4.12 from their site, and it worls great!!

Lord of the Rings July 4th, 2006 05:58 PM

Did you look at the stickies at the top of this section? Usual answers are to:

1. Do a reboot in safe mode & repair permissions; SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions

2. reinstall the "Offline" java version due to possibility of corrupt install. http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...ase4intel.html

3. Delete LW preferences folder found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Lord of the Rings July 4th, 2006 06:48 PM

Any problems installing then see this: You get the "null" message in the Apple installer when a OS X thinks a more recent version is installed. Double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: J2SE50Release4.pkg, delete it and try again. Receipts folder sample image

Lord of the Rings July 5th, 2006 05:43 PM

In response to your personal message, delete the installimewire.pkg file from your receipts folder & try installing again. Receipts folder sample image. Also make sure you deleted the previous LW prefs folder.

Also see if you can find any limewire crash reports. This will hopefully show why LW is not working on your system. Else ...
Console is in your Applications folder inside the Utlities folder.

Could you open Console, and then try to open LimeWire, and then note what messages are shown in the Console?

You can post the parts here, or PM me if you prefer.

I don't have such an intel-mac so I can only advise as to what usually causes this problem.

Limewire on Intel-based Mac

All sounds great - I'll try that.
Thanks!!

You need LimeWire 4.10.5 or newer.

ender July 5th, 2006 09:09 PM

I am having the same issue on my Intel Mac. I am unsure as to when LimeWire "broke". I was running some older version [ 4.10 I believe] and now it will not launch. I am running 10.4.7, Quicktime 7.1.x . I have re-run the Java installer as recommended.

I'm not so sure but I suspect the ppc-thin Java stub is not compatible with the intel. That's not the one intel requires. I'll see if I can find out.

Might I suggest you update your LW to 4.12.3; http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml or your personal pro page if you're a pro user.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am running 4.12.3 . I got the latest version thinking the current one was corrupt.

Lord of the Rings July 5th, 2006 09:50 PM

So does the new version work?

No, the errors above are with 4.12.3 . Sorry if that was not clear. Its important to mention that Limewire 4.10.x did work on my Intel Mac. Something in the last two to three software updates caused it to fail [my assumption]

ender July 9th, 2006 06:06 PM

I think I may have found my problem, only how to fix it ...

as per the message in the log

java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Can't load library: /usr/lib/java/libObjCJava.dylib

The Library in question is in fact not there. Where can I get an versin of this library [Intel Mac]. I have re-installed Java a few times.

Lord of the Rings July 9th, 2006 07:57 PM

This java library should already be within the libraries. Perhaps better to do a combo update: 10.4.6 combo update link for intel macs. BTW you should NEVER delete the Receipt files unless instructed under extreme circumstances. These files are needed by the sytem!

ender July 9th, 2006 08:36 PM

I'm running 10.4.7 and re-ran the combo updater, no luck, library is still not there. I've never been in there before[usr/lib/java], no way I deleted it myself.

Lord of the Rings July 9th, 2006 09:01 PM

Setting up Java 1.5, well in the meantime set it back to java 1.4.2

Reinstall your Java 1.5. that will mean removing your 1.5 receipts file. Also delete your LW prefs folder (of course whilst LW is closed) found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Once again, thanks for the help! I have purged Java 1.5 [as suggested, removing the receipt and all] and re installed java 1.5 [Apple's release 4, the latest] It doesn't matter if I use 1.5 or 1.4.2, the same error referencing the library in question pops up

Lord of the Rings July 9th, 2006 09:15 PM

How many times have you repaired permissions? (a) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...6094#post96094 (permissions),
(b) SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions, & (c) Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption

ender July 9th, 2006 09:15 PM

Can anyone else here that has an Intel mac send me a copy of the libObjCJava.dylib [in /usr/lib/java/ ] file to

wojtek dot zlobicki AT gmail dot com.

Reinstallation of tiger should to the trick! have you actually searched your computer to see whether such a folder exists ... perhaps LW isn't recognising it. A reinstallation sounds the best. Even if tried before ... repair permissions both before & afterward of installation.

I have repaired permissions as well as the volume and no problems were found. A full OS re-install is a stretch. I did get Aquisition working so I have no "true" need for Limewire now [I just refuse to let it beat me]. I do like the software's [Limewire] integration with iTunes.

A full OS re-install is a bit much, I am going to see if I can get copies of the files off some friends with Macs.

ender July 9th, 2006 10:19 PM

On a side note, I have examined the package for Java 1.5 , it does NOT contain the dylib files I am looking for.

Lord of the Rings July 9th, 2006 10:43 PM

Then you may need to do an install from the initial release. Don't only look in the java package but also elsewhere Java may install its components.

ender July 10th, 2006 07:00 PM

I had a friend email me the java libraries from his machine and all is good now. I was missing a total of 5 files !!! Have no idea why they were missing.

LOTR, thank you very much for all your assistance.

MCSquared July 31st, 2006 09:56 PM

Did all that - step-by-step. No changes. Same problem.
I even tried Limewire's Tech support (4x) - not a peep.

After buying this laptop brand-new 3 weeks ago, I'm not interesting in reinstalling.
:-)

I'll change to another P2P Client first. I've just paid so much over the years to the Limewire folks. no more - until this is corrected, or I get a reply from their Tech Support.
