Angry Mac Powers down frequently!

Since installing Lime Wire my Imac G5 running 10.4 randomly shuts down.
The machine just goes dead. Sometimes it will restart easily, at other times
it may take 2 or 3 restarts before it stays on. It might stay on for hours or just a few minutes.

Also, when it starts up it no longer asks for my password to log on to the computer. I spoke with Apple and with out spending $160 or so they won't help. The conversation led me to believe it was probably a problem with Lime Wire as opposed to the power supply going bad.

Any suggestions?

Also, I have requested help from Lime Wire support three times in the last week and no one has responded.

I set my mac to not sleep. I have to do that due to my constant video converting. Perhaps you should do the same.

Logging on for me is automatic. Perhaps yours is also set the same way. Under OSX System Prefs ->Security You will see options for Disable automatic login, if that's what you'd prefer.

Another point about the computer sleeping, you can set it to do it automatically in certain ways. Check the Energy Saver options & schedule as this might be a part of your problem.

I do recall there was an imac with a heat issue. If you give us some time (not today) I might be able to find more info about it. It caused it to be unpredictable. And if a system is unpredictable then LW is sure to bring out the worst in it, due to OSX's poor implemenation of Java. In fact, I think there may even be a thread about it on the forums. There's a 3rd party utility you can get to check for this problem. This problem had similar symptoms as you seem to have. As I recall I think it was one of the earlier G5 models unless I'm mistaken. As suggested, the symptoms didn't only necessarily happen with LW but was a problem non users of LW had. It's just that LW tends to bring these problems out to the surface more easily.

Here's one easy fix http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86817

If the power cord is not the problem, maybe the serial number is covered under http://www.apple.com/support/imac/re...ensionprogram/

And as LOTR pointed out--hardware problems are not a LimeWire related problem.

I'll see if I can find out more later from apple about your issue. In the meantime, you can get this free utility called XRG (click on link). BTW it might be worth searching apple yourself for this issue.

It's not included in the Apple list of serial numbers. I changed it to not sleep.,
Now it occationally restarts itself instead of shutting down.
