If you really want to help narrow down the problem, try deleting just the gnutella.net file from that folder (it remembers the addresses of your search hosts).

My prefereces folder under library does not include any folder called limewire or anything close to it.

I'm using OSX 10.4.9 and the free version of limewire.

Any other clues?
