Question Quicktime

When i download video files from limewire, i usually download the .avi files. That is the normal file for quicktime right? But when i try to open it, all i get is a blank screen and a window saying i am missing a component. Does anyone know what this component is or if i should download a different type of file like .mov or .wmv
>I have downloaded the windows media viewer expansion for quicktime

this is a frustrating issue

thanks

Probably codecs.

Try using VLC media player it's a good one that has the codecs built in and will play most file types.

More info here: CODECs list for Movies /Alternate players / Video help forums

Default avi files

You must download a DivX codec from DivX to play AVI files. It is a free download and once it is installed on your computer, AVI files will run smoothly.

QuickTime player itself is limited, even with QT Pro. As LW newbie suggested you need to get extra codecs. Unfortunately DivX cannot play all AVI files. Neither can the DivX player. Better as suggested by FOTH is VLC player. I have my VLC set as the default to play avi files & some other formats, & QT Player to play mpeg 2 files. See how to change default program here How to change default program in OSX
