I am running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and recently applied the latest security update and subsequently applied version 1.1 of the same security update when Apple released it, which patched the QuickTime Java security hole. I had also toyed with an interface theme change, which I have since removed as well as removing Application Enhancer 2.0.2.

My Limewire application will not load, the icon bounces in the Dock, the splash screen will appear and the application will begin to load, however, once the launch process gets to the "Loading HTML Engine" stage, the splash screen will disappear and so will the application's icon in the Dock. Limewire then doesn't launch.

Despite numerous reinstalls, deleting preferences, cache files, etc. Creating a new user with fresh preferences and attemptin a launch from that user's account, Limewire will just not launch. It crashes when it attempts to load the HTML engine.

Can someone please help?

Others with Intel Macs had this problem, and I couldn't help them. However, there is a new beta released, and you could also try Jum's alternate LimeWire that uses a different instal method LimeWire cvs builds (4.13.3jum487) Perhaps either of those will install and run.

Sounds like you have tried the usual suggestions, except the Safe Boot (restarting and holding down the shift key right after the startup tone).

The other way to get more detailed info on the problem is to turn on Console (in the Applications/Utilites folder).

Tried the alternate beta but that did not work!! I thought about Safe Boot but I figured that Java is part of the OS and a Safe Boot might not change anything. Apart from that, Safe Book disables my airport card and I need that to connect to the internet. Considering I'm not the only one with a problem, it sounds like there is a strong case to move Limewire off Java and onto a more stable programming language. Thanks.

Since neither the beta nor the jum version made any difference, I'd figure the problem is with the java. However, Phex, also a java app, worked for someone else, if I recall correctly

re Safe Boot, it completes once you get to the login. So, just restart normally instead of logging in. Safe Boot runs a file system check and repair (fsck), especially on the OS stuff.

Just out of curiousity, does Phex do the same?

Yes, I tried Phex and it loaded with the Splash screen, then crashed. There is no "Application unexpectedly quit message", the icon will bounce in the Dock and then a few seconds later, it will disappear and the application does not load. Phex crashed during a normal boot, however, I suspect the same will happen in Safe Boot, as was the case with Limewire.

OK--that confirms a broken java install. Sure would be good to know how that happened.

You probably have to first delete the "receipt" that tells OSX your java is up to date first. The receipt is in the main Library (double-click the hard-drive to get at it) at /Library/Receipts/JavaForMacOSX10.4Release5.pkg

Hope that does the trick, because otherwise the only other step is the drastic reinstalling and updating of the system. Ugg.

Well, you were right, I deleted the package receipt and reinstalled Java and Limewire is working as normal again. I would like to know how Java was broken as well...

I would not have had any sign of this, as my web browsers (Safari & Firefox) displayed no signs of any Java error, nor was anything reported, and websites seemed to be functioning as normal.

Like I said, the last thing I remember doing before Firefox broke was installing the Quicktime security update. I doubt that would have broken Java but it was an HTML Java fix (hence HTML engine failure).

Actually, I did have a user account error not too long before, however, that revolved around some 'broken' files which were promptly repaired by the OS (although waiting for login to happen was a pain).
