Cannot Upload or Break Firewall - Please Help

Been trying for days and checked out every relevant thread I can find.
Here's the problem. I can put my folders into limewire but not the files, music, playlists, movies etc they contain as they are dimmed. Also I cannot break the firewall. Are the two problems connected?
Have gone to os x Firewall settings for tiger and complied.
Have gone to adsl Router and ensured UPnP enabled.
1. OS version? - os x 10.4.9
2. What firewalls you have? - os x?-opened for LW as per instructions.
3. How much ram? - 640
4. Hard Disk space available? - 58 Gb
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) - broadband adsl
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? -D-Link adsl router 502T
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? - House
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? - 4.12.15 & 1.4.2_09
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Spin (Australia) who advise they support p2p and have no blocking of limewire
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? - Your Test Worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. - No
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 1st Try
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? - Yes
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...1&d=1158099342
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? - UPnP enabled. connected via ethernet cable to computer.

Other Information: ISP connection Speed 256/64

I have d/l the adsl router user's guide but do not understand any of the terms re firewall or what items to check or uncheck via the web page. Could it be this? And if so what should be checked or unchecked.
If someone cannot help me I'll just be another freeloader. Would rather not.

You have a Nat Firewall within your router and you will need to port forward...
These are your instructions...
Port Forwarding for the Dlink DSL-502T

As I am not a Mac user , I can't help with the other problem you are experiencing sorry...;)

Thank You for reply. Much appreciated.
But now really confused cos before I could set Port Foward I noticed hits and uploads occurring (on my D/L files), even with brick wall still there. So do I need to remove the wall or not?

wondering why July 24th, 2007 10:56 PM

Well if it's not effecting your downloading or uploading leave it, but you probably won't be able to direct connect...
Why did you list it as a problem ??

Trying To Be a Good LWer

:shoot:
Appreciate reply. Answer is, I cannot put my music, playlists, movies, etc into LW to share (still can't) and would like to.
While searching threads there is all the chat and instruction about settings to remove the wall against globe, which apparently helps everyone and improves my connection to other LW users and G network. wall still up.
This morning is the first time there was any activity at all re upload, registering in bottom left. Now none.
Spent all day trying to figure out port forwarding (still trying as difficulty understanding ip's).
Bottom Line. Just don't want to be selfish is all.
Any suggestions from any mac users welcome. And yes I know I'm  dumb when it comes to computers so keep it simple please.

At Last. Nearly there. But Playlists?

:)
Been a while, nearly there. Got the firewall down. So hopefully can better share music and videos.

Port Forwarding did it. :xeri_ok1ani: The threads and instructions helped but so many anomolies and significant differences for my computer and router set up. Had to interpret and persevere.

Managed to put some music and videos in library too. But not using LW app.
Had to put files on desktop (duplicates when not wanting to move originals (important especially for iTunes). Then open Finder and drag the desktop files to my LW folder there. The files then appear in red in LW library (and stay red). It was then nescessary to select each file, right (control) click and select "share file" from menu. :yahoo:

Now all I would like is to find a thread (been looking) or instruction to put playlists in library instead of just single song files. Is it possible? - Anyone!
Yes or no would do.

Thanks to Wondering Why for answering initially.

By the way, What is direct connect?

This should help...
How to use Bitzi Web Lookup .. & How to use Magnet Links & Direct Connect/Browse/Chat

roimay July 29th, 2007 02:03 AM

Uploading own files?

:rolleyes_2:
Thanks for that Wondering Why. Yes I worked out Bitzi. And will study Magnet link.

Even with Firewall gone, strong signal and getting a lot of hits on my files there are no uploads (except for some uploads on files downloaded from LW). Don't know if this is a problem or not? Appreciate your thoughts if you have time.

One thing that puzzles me is the whatismyip link. I have the number but don't know where to put it or what to do with it?

Have managed to work out how to share playlists / Albums. The trick is to record the Playlist, Album, or Side in the case of old LP's, as one file or song. It can then be placed in the library for upload. (If I can sort out above). Once downloaded the other end the recipient can use an App such as Quicktime PRO or Toast to edit / Trim to pull out the individual songs.

Shouldn't the posts be in last posted - first listed order?

Apart from above re upload everything going well :xeri_ok1ani:

Give it time, now that your firewall is down you will have other hosts browsing your files, don't panic...;)

Low Bits and Bytes

:notsure: Don't know if this is the right place to put this, but putting it here in case other newbies setting up look here and haven't been to: Gnutella Forums > Current Gnutella Client Forums > LimeWire (Cross-platform) > Open Discussion topics > A few things to consider while configuring Limewire for optimal performance...
It is long  but very informative.

Also cos it does relate to Uploads. Anyway,

I have ADSL/modem on a plan of 256 dl/ 64 ul Kbps (or 32 / 8 KB/s) - sorry folks that is all I can afford - and speed tests indicate dl of around 170 Kbps and ul of about 60 Kbps. Dividing by 8 for LW speed units this translates to 21 KB for dl and 7.5 KB for ul.

These speeds are OK for me. I'm in no hurry and going nowhere particular.

However: I was wondering Dear Wondering Why (or someone) if, With settings of:
dl speed - 28.44 KB
ul speed - 19.69 KB
Uploads per person - 1
Uploads slots - 2
Max Downloads - 8
which I know are not as per the thread above but we are dealing with low bandwidth capacity here.

my small bits and bytes are too small for anyone to Upload successfully or if I should change my settings.

I noted in one thread the maximum downloads possible for LW Pro is 14. Is that the same for basic? Or is it set lower at 8, which seems to be the default?
:newspaper:

roimay July 30th, 2007 12:42 AM

Just realised last post may be misleading.
My Actual LW download speed is between 1 and 18 KB/s usually below 10 and Actual Upload speed, when on the rare occasion it has registered, is between 1 and 5 KB/s usually below 3.

Lord of the Rings July 30th, 2007 07:08 AM

8 is max for basic, 10 for pro, but if using T3 can get higher (14 for pro.) But that's not the no. of downloads, that's the no. of sources per download file.

BTW on 256/64 plan which I was on up until early this year, you won't actually get that speed. NOBODY gets the speeds quoted by their ISP. There are speed (overhead) losses due to distance from ISP, quality of line, losses due to equipment such as modem/router. My speed was around 27/6 KB/s from memory.

I was always uploading. I had popular videos for a start, & people would start uploading almost as soon as I connected. lol :D Your settings are similar to what mine were.

In my experience, I always seem to do better when uploading. I also try to share similar to what I am downloading at the time. In that way it helps me to find & connect to users with files I am looking for.

Try using the advanced search options, namely, Find More Results. That can be very handy to use every now & again. I also re-do my searches. Searching is & always has been MUCH more effective than using the find more sources/resume, etc. options.

I also use show all qualities & speeds in my searches. Then decide myself whether those that might be difficult to connect to are worthy of choosing.

Lord of the Rings July 30th, 2007 07:26 AM

BTW you WILL need to port forward for your router if you are seeing firewall (brick wall) as I had a similar model router. See http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...4g-router.html for similar model instructions for Mac OSX & also see Manual port forward instructions & sample image

It's a Miracle!

:xeri_ok1ani: Thank you for your reply and ideas. Will leave settings. Currently am sharing around 30 files (well only just started) but this will increase.
Interestingly only files I had d/l from LW were being u/l'd and none of my own. I turned these files off to see if it would help u/l my own. No it did not.
A friend says she cannot find them - though they are getting lots of hits.
Indeed, while d/l a file of about 570 Mb at poor speed, the whole thing came to a faltering halt (including Mail and Safari) after 20 hrs at around 40 - 50%.

I shut both computer and modem down. Restarted, checked Mail & Safari -OK - reset LW - which automatically started wizard when opened - and I found many of settings had gone esp in sharing. Ensured all files available to share.

Now it is going great guns, even got up to 20 KB/s a few times. So uploading, even if not my own yet, seems to help. :Smilywais:

Don't Understand your last re BTW ....... etc. Thanks to your and others info in threads I got rid of firewall a while ago. Your Help and dedication is appreciated. :xirokrotima:

Lord of the Rings July 31st, 2007 06:20 PM

BTW = by the way

AFAIK your model router does not support UPnP. But I may be wrong. That means people may still be able to upload from you but are forced to push their way through. This can often be unsuccessful; particularly for non LW gnutella programs. If things are going well then fine. :)

To Block or not to Block, Peer or not to Peer?

Dear Ring Lord, Sorry to trouble you. :o But when you said.
In my experience, I always seem to do better when uploading. I also try to share similar to what I am downloading at the time. In that way it helps me to find & connect to users with files I am looking for.
Are you saying I should block video uploads if I want to download audio files?

I ask this as currently I am uploading many (maybe too many- will have to check my monthly limit) video files but cannot download audio ( waiting sources, need more sources, etc) though I know they are the less common ones.

Also am still trying to get my head around ultrapeer, which I seem to be even with such low speed and my ultrapeer box unchecked, and leafs?? and should the OOB Searching box be checked or not. I cannot find appropriate thread. :w00t: Will keep looking but any pointers appreciated.

BTW. Upnp is enabled and I am Port Fowarding.
