(a) LimeWire OSX FREEZING, & (b) Lots of Search Results, No Download?
 

Just a query. A search finds lots of Results with same file size, similar Name, lots of numbers in the # columns and all same type. Obviously the same file. However download attempt is often 'waiting sources' or 'need more sources'. I have LW Pro and not sure what is going on.

Tried all the usual things of find more sources and get more results, etc.

Anyone got an answer?

Yes, Thank you. I think you are right. I did not realize Fakes files were as large as 700 Mb. Took a lot of searches with Bitzi to find the real file. Downloading now Ok - except LW keeps freezing (unresponsive and lost internet connection). Have to Force Quit often.
I think it is because I have too many things at one time (LW, Mail and Safari) and my 254/64 broadband plan cannot handle it. Hope it is nothing more serious.

Are you connected...ie Do you see full green or blue bars or do you see red bars ??
Do you have a wall in front of the globe ??

If you are connected fine, try this....

Go to Tools > Options > Searching > Lisence Warning and make sure the box is not ticked and select apply...

If that does not help try going to your Connections Tab in limewire, if it's not showing up go to Veiw > Show/Hide and make sure the connection tab has a tick next to it...
Then click on the Hosts and remove them and let Limewire search for some more...
(try to take note of the hosts IP numbers if the same ones keep re-appearing add them to your host filter...) ;)

Tools > Options > Filters and select the Host Filter and add these IP's into it and select apply...

To Wondering Why: Are you replying to roimay or Daniela's difficulties? or Both?

The 'Lots of search Results / No Download' problem was definitely a fake file issue. Solved/Understood by the Tech Spt>Download/Upload Probs>Fake Files in Search results site.

As far as LW freezing and losing connection and having to Force Quit after a few hours give or take, I still don't know. Definitely not too many Apps open as I closed all except LW and it still happened.
My Firewall is down (no wall). The connection bars excellent (Turbo Charged). I have now un ticked the license warning, so lets see if that helps. When restarted the connection hosts are different. so that is probably not the problem. Will wait and see for the moment. Downloads and Uploads still OK after restarting.

Interestingly smilies no longer work, nor any of the font bar - dont know why - not important.

For Daniela, the answers also seem appropriate so should check and go through your instructions.

But roimay you could try changing your Java version as some of the latest Java's have been a bit buggy for some...

uninstall all versions of Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version....

Yes I am a Mac user. And I have not fiddled with Java yet. Though did update recently to 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2. BTW Ihave Mac 10.4.10 and LW 4.14.8 PRO also both recently updated/upgraded.

Interesting though that at 98% of a 700Mb d/l, going well, it froze when I opened Mail and responded to your last. Had to Force Quit - Again.

I had stopped sharing all the big and popular files and it seemed to be going well.

Maybe it is just my low bandwith unable to cope? Leave it for the moment. I will check performance and see how things go after trying a few variations over the next week or so. Need that long as it takes a while to d/l 'stuff' and I want to see if it freezes when uploading only.

Lord of the Rings is the guy to get advice for Mac's, I will forward this thread to him, he will know why you are freezing up...:)

For Mac freezing, try these things:

1. Setting up Java 1.5 though chances are you're already using java 1.5

2. Keep your shares less than 2,000. (if sharing mostly videos then half as many or less.)

3. Reduce your incomplete files; Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! (click on blue link)

4. Disable Ultrapeer capabilities. Go to LW prefs, Advanced -> Performance & disable UP. Also disable TLS.

5. Set both uplds & downlds to autoclear.

6. Close all LW windows you don't need open at that time. eg: Connections window.

7. If you're not in front of your comp, then hide LW in the dock.

8. Don't use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This can have side-fx such as affect LW's connection quality. May queue your files for much much longer. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find Sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time. Wiser & more effective is to search the file again. If you have a previous search tab open then control-click & choose Get More Results or Search again. For files that don't have search tabs open, control-click & choose search for ....

9. Make sure you have plenty of spare space on your OSX system drive. Personally I download to a different partition/hard disk drive. All OSX programs including the system use Virtual Memory (VM), so you need to be sure you have plenty of HDD space available for them. LW in OSX uses considerable VM, particularly if you have lots of incompletes, shares, are doing Resumes of files as hinted above.

Thank You. Appreciated. All above had been done as a result of Thread searches, except Java 1.5. Will check that out.

I suspect at this time cause maybe due to file being d/l. Popular A classic. Four days & nights to dl - minus freezing time (several). Over 750Mb, yet just over 8 mins play time (beginning of movie only). Have posted rating on Bitzi and red file'd it.

Will see how things go over next week.

Font and Smilie panel on this message pad not working - Is that normal.

LW Just Froze again while typing last message. Uploading only.

Yes I am on Java 1.5.

BTW have 51 Gb free, Only do 1 dl at a time, sharing about 120 files music, movies & tv shows.

Freezing still a problem after all suggestions and variations followed.

Maybe this thread should be Re Named Freezing, which I cannot do.

In last I said I was sharing 120 files. Not sure if am sharing iTunes or not. If sharing ITunes then the number is closer to 2000.

Check your numbers at bottom of interface. It will show no. # of files being shared. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...1&d=1162908502 which shows 1859 for shared at one point & 443 on the other. That's where you can see how many files you are sharing. :)

Re: smilies: go to advanced post (not quick reply!!!) or advanced edit options to get smilie options. ;)

Also, go to LW Library window & click any folders with arrows to open them to see what is being shared.

eg: iTunes shared library or this one Albumwrap/iTunes

Still Freezing
 

It's 120 files as I first thought. Was Confused about the ticked box in Prefs>iTunes>sharing. But that is just for Locally connected computers I guess.

Have red file'd all movies. Now sharing 90 Audio files only. Freezing still occurring. Managed to dl couple of small (10Mb) audio files between freezes.

LW currently off. Could it be I have a virus? Thought Macs were immune.

As for Font panel and smilies. Bit more complicated. when I click in panel, say for bold or colour or smilie it is like I'm clicking outside the box?

Don't know what to do next. Trash and dl LW from scratch. In which case would I still get the pro I paid for?

Sorry to be a bother.

It would not be a virus. I'm not having freezing problems yet my computer is quite old (QuickSilver 733 with 1.5 GB RAM & 22 GB spare OSX system drive space.)

Let's take a closer look at your system: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) & any other information you can provide such as no. of incompletes, etc.

Try deleting your LW preferences folder whilst LW is CLOSED. The prefs folder is found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire
But make a note of settings because once you restart LW, you will need to reconfigure all your settings including your download location, days to keep incompletes, speeds, etc.

If you have a 2nd HDD (or partition), change download location to that instead if that's ok to do so.

If still no improvements after applying the above, then try the following version which is based on LW Pro but is not the official release LimeWire cvs builds (4.13.4jum490) & choose one of the nightly builds (click on nightly build link).

9. Spin - I phoned them. They Do not constrain LW.
10. Your test worked.
11. No, not sharing.
12. New problem. Not experienced but have dl and ul for couple months.
13. No firewall.

Other Info. Have deleted LW prefs and restarted and reset. Currently still loading shared files (red to black progressively).
Freezing occurs after short time when dl or when ul with no dl. Have 3 dl''s incomplete (audio) at the moment - Need more sources. Not worried about those for the moment. Usually have only 1 dl at a time with large size.
Autoclear for dl and ul ticked.
Tubo charged connection.
When opening LW it seems it is not loading properly but that is just a feeling. Will see how it goes now after deleting/reinstalling prefs.

Froze after about an hour.
Force Quit, then opened again. After reaching turbo connection, a minute or so, quit LW (force not necessary) but I noticed the quitting window did not display 'shutting down LW' and the blue bar indicated a stuck mode as opposed to smooth motion.

Set up a new account. To to System prefs -> Accounts & cllick unlock & then + buttons (you'll need to supply admin password) & name it something like Test. Then try using LW in that account. See if you have same problems.

LW carried on a treat with my 10.3.9 1.25GHz 128Mb emac until I put 1Gb of RAM in it. Basically could not run any other application while LW was happening.The whole machine would lock up. After stuffing RAM into it I can do 4-5 Word windows, 4-5 Safari tabs and Mail and Calculator. If iTunes starts all is well but if DivX tries to start when an .avi file has finished downloading it all goes pear shaped. DivX is fine if I only have two or three windows happening. BTW, my 40Gb HDD has only got 5Gb left on it.

Close LW down & you will get the virtual memory back. Meanwhile follow suggestions on page 1 of this thread.

24 Hours and LW working on New Account. As I understand it the problem was not enough memory. I Don't pretend to understand what is going on but fine for now. Will see how it goes.

BTW interesting observation in passing, your penguin sequence misses the last frames, the flipper clip, before replaying. Maybe my computer is not fully loading, which is why font and smilies panel don't work.
