Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Thanks for getting back to me. Are you completely sure that you have the right version? I ask because in 2.0 and about the download failure message is "Could Not Download" and not "Couldn't Download," but I'm not sure how precise you were being about that message.

You can see the version you're running in the Help>>About window.

Thanks very much again for your help in debugging these problems. I'm changing a couple of things on the OSX version that should make it a bit nicer for the next major release.

Happy to help - I'll help you guys whenever I can.

The version is 2.1.3 - and it says "Could Not Download." Sorry for my gramatical slip.

Is there anything in your information that describes the color coding in the results window?

Oh - I actually got some successes when I went to download this time - just two out of 15+ though - musch less than my usual success rate.

Thanks!

Angry Same Problems, Looking for Help

Last week I upgraded, at the prompting of the program, to Limewire 2.1.3. Since that time, I have hand nothing but problems. I've had it! I want my old Limewire back. I went on line to see if I could download an older version and found none. So here I am in the forum and what do I discover? I'm not the only one with these problems. Here is what I am experiencing:
1) 98% of my download attempts come back as Could Not Download within seconds. Love the speed, but the results are ridiculous. Same downloads with older version didn't have this problem.

2) The Preferences (Options) didn't save the first few times I changed them. Then they did. I have no idea why they decided to work the 4th time I changed them.

3) The program has little bugs that do not repeat. Crashes on my machine or locks up with amazing frequency-- and OSX has been pretty stable for me and the older version. The last straw was a bug that didn't recognize the mouse click for starting a download. Everything else worked but that--when I finally got a file to start downloading, the whole program collapsed on me.

I really like this program and was considering paying for the pro version, but not after this experience. I would like my old version back and will wait until the new version has all of these bugs exterminated before I consider upgrading.

Thank you for you time and attention and whatever assistance you my provide.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

One the first color-coding question, there are the following two color codes in the search window:

1) Green coding for the speed indicates that it is a speed that we have measured on that host by tracking its bandwidth. If the speed is not green, it means it's just the speed setting that the user specified. Basically, the green just means it's a more accurate estimate of speed.

2) The red encoding for ip addresses indicates that the host returning that search result is firewalled, and that it is therefore somewhat less likely that you will be able to download from them. This entire column, however, will likely be removed in future releases. Three stars in the "Quality" column also indicates that the host is probably firewalled. I would not consider this too seriously, however, as firewalled hosts often give excellent download speeds.

In response to the second post, thanks very much for the thorough feedback. It sounds like you're a little upset, so I appreciate the controlled and detailed post that will help me improve the situtation for future releases!

I'll respond point by point:

1) Download success-

Several users have reported similar problems, and I will definitely investigate this. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that there might be some issue with permissions if you have multiple users on your machine. Do you definitely have write permissions for your download directory?

2) Preferences issues-

I think a lot of Mac users may get confused by our user interface here. Basically, clicking the "X" is considered cancelling your changes. To apply your changes, you need to either press the "Apply" or the "OK" button. I realize that this is not the standard way of doing things for the Mac, and we may change it in the future. It's really the only operating system that does it that way, and LimeWire is all the same code base for all platforms. I also personally feel that the OK or Apply button schemes is better user interface design, but that's just my view.

Could that have been the problem?

3) Other little bugs

Can you identify any specific circumstances under which freezing occurs? On the mouse click issue, we are aware that there can be some problems here. As far as crashes go, it is also possible that you were an "UltraPeer," which can be more taxing on your system. You can disable this in the Options window.

Also, what is the configuration of your system? (G3, G4, RAM)

Unhappy Solutions not so easy...

Mr. Fisk,

Thanks for the timely response. I am quite upset, but acting like a raving lunatic isn't going help either of us. I have friends who are programmers and friends who work in tech support. I respect both fields as having knowledge I do not and try to act accordingly. Here are the responses to you suggestions.

1) No, I do not have multiple users. Nor did I have multiple users when I had the earlier version of Limewire. The only thing on my system that has changed is the updating of Limewire. Yes, I have write permissions for my download directory.

2) While I am not a programmer, I am not one of these dunder head users that seem to plague tech support people, either. I am aware of and know how to use both platforms. I was not confused by the interface. I clicked apply and then OK when I was done making my changes. I am at a loss to explain the lack of consistency in this complaint. To be honest, its not a large complaint. The program did finally accept the changes and keep them. I included it only because most programmers want to know anything unusual that a user has experienced with their program. I am much more concerned by the reduced ability to download files. No arguements from me on which is a better interface. I feel its the user's responsibility to know the machine and to follow the cues. If you program the cues well (Apply button seems to be pretty obvious to me) then you have no worries on design. Of course, the problem still existed-- but its up to you whether or not it is of concern. In answer to your question, NO user error was not the source of this bug.

3) I am aware of the Ultra Peer disabling button. I confess to not knowing what Ultra Peer means. Please enlighten me and I will see if it applies to me. As to conditions-- no patterns emerged. Sometimes it happened when I had other programs running. I quit the other programs and it happened again. I restarted my machine and started the program and it quit again-- repeatedly. The mouse thing happened with no warning and while everything else worked. The download problem seems to be more prevalent with video and images, but does affect audio downloads as well. I have a G3 IMac and have a DSL connection (I forget the actual speed, I had two choices and I chose the lower speed). I am running OS X vrs. 10.1.2.

Again, I thank you for your quick response. I hope this answers your questions. Can you answer mine? Where can I download and earlier version of Limewire until such time as these bugs have been addressed and fixed?

Default os10

I'm new to this, but noticed I had no problem runnnng the os9 version, but was never sucessful with the os10 version. I had changed from the default directory setting at initial setup. I changed it back to the default and was sucessful at first attempt.

Unhappy also having download issues with 2.1.3

My downloads are also failing with 2.1.3

lots of search results though

I am sole user, with admin privilages

sharing is on with multiple mp3's for the taking, "I am not nor have I ever been a FREELOADER."

to paraphrase somebody else:

"(1) using LimeWire 2.1.3 on Mac OS X
(2) I am behind the OS X firewall - Brickhouse activated
(3) I try not to select IPs that are red (i.e., IPs behind a firewall)
(4) I tried (and failed) to find the answer at the gnutella's forum for the answer
(5) 90-95% of the times I try to download, LimeWire tells me "Connecting to ..." and then "Could not connect". "

Using a cable modem and Comcast. MoreForUs under VPC works fine, but I'd like to stick with OS X, and can't find much Mac stuff on MoreForUs.

Before the upgrade to 2.1.3 the GUI was flakey (redraws) but I had more consistant downloads. Now the GUI's better but the downloading SUCKS.

I was going to upgrade to Pro - but will now wait for a more reliable version.

To repeat, the previous 2.x version was working great, actually got a 400mb+ download, but now can't get a simple mp3 or even 1kb files with any regular success with 2.1.3

What's going on?

(Amazon's pro forma profits last quarter were $35 million.) Amazon attributed the profit to gains in its international units (yes, Virginia, there is a global economy) and to cutting of costs in a variety of ways, including switching its servers over to Linux. (That move prompted a wonderful quote from a Microsoft spokesperson in a News.com article: "With Linux, customers end up being in the operating systems business, managing software updates and security patches while making sure the multitude of software packages don't conflict with each other." And just how would that be different from Windows?

A couple of questions for users having these problems:

1) Are you using the same save directory in this version that you used with the last one?

2) The last version that worked so well for you was 2.1.2 or another? Do you remember?

3) Are you sharing on a drive different from your main hard drive?

Thanks.

Also, can you try downloading the slightly older version from here:

http://www9.limewire.com/download/2.1.1/LimeWireOSX.sit

just to make sure that it's still working better? It's possible that something on the network changed.

Thanks again.
