Limewire 2.1.3 DOES NOT WORK! I "upgraded" to 2.1.3 on OS X, and now I can't get anything from anyone. I can find things I would like to download with up to "Multiple (10)" yet none of them are able to download. I have also noticed that pretty much nobody is able to download from me, yet before when I was using 2.1, I had a constant stream of people downloading from me (I have 400+ files available). Is it possible that there is some sort of weird "version clash" that's causing this problem? Like I said, 2.1 had worked pretty well for me, but now 2.1.3 is doing nothing for me. HELP! |
P.S. I have just noticed that everyone that is trying to download from me is getting a FILE NOT FOUND message in the Status column on the Monitor Tab. Yet it still says that I'm sharing 406 files?! |
We'll look into any issues in this area. Do you have multiple user accounts on your machine? We have seen problems with write permissions if you use LimeWire from different accounts on OSX. |
My Limewire 2.1.3 also won't work!! I upgraded last week to Limewire 2.1.3 (using OS 10.1.2), and I get maybe 2% of all downloads I initiate, it redraws constantly and when the files download they are hidden until I go find them in Sherlock and manually drag them where I need to put them. I also notice almost no upload activity (I have over 1,300 files) and the preferences I save don't stay saved. Help!! |
It sounds like there might be a couple of issues going on. On the preferences side, do you have multiple user accounts on your machine? It sounds like LimeWire is trying to write to a file/directory that it does not have permissions for. One solution for this would be to reinstall LimeWire in a directory where you have permissions, and then add your old shared directory to your list of shared directories in the options window. As far as continual redraws, we are aware of this issue in the case where you try to expand a group as more search results are still coming in. This should be fixed in the next release. Are there other cases where continual redraws will occur? As far as the downloads not going to your shared directory correctly, it sounds like this might also be an issue with user permissions. Is it possible that you do not have permissions to write to your save directory? We're going to change the behavior of this in future releases, so this issue should be fixed. For now, though, reinstalling to a new directory would probably be the best solution. |
Thanks for the quick reply. I actually have only one user account on the computer, and am using the same directory I used sucecssfully with previous versions of Limewire. It sounds like others are experiencing the same problem - I saw this on a review of Limewire on one of the portal sites the other day. |
When you say that the preferences aren't saved, are you referring to your setting in the options window, or to things like column positioning? Also, when you quite the program, are you quitting through the quit option in the Mac menu bar, or through the File>>Close option within the LimeWire window? Finally, do most of your downloads end up in the "Could Not Download" state? |
Hi Adam: The typical issue I have with preferences is setting my minimal speed as a search criteria. I save it, then still get results saying "Modem." And yes, virtually everything I try to download now results in a "Could Not Download" message. Both of these problems are new to the latest release. The Release before that was AWESOME - Limewire never performed better. Thanks! |
Hmmnn...I'm not at all sure what's going on with the problems downloading, especially since that part of the code has not changed at all to my knowledge. Is it possible that you just got unlucky with some of your downloads, or are you continuing to have this problem? The preferences issue is also odd. Would you mind doing a little experiment for me? Just try changing some other settings aside from the speed filter setting, and also try setting the speed filter setting to, say, T3, and then restarting. There may be an issue with that setting in particular. When you do this, are any of the settings saved the next time you start LimeWire? Thanks. |
The downloading problem was immediate when I installed the new version - and I have re-downloaded the version and installed it again since then. I usually bring down 25-30 songs a day and have succeeded in just six successful downloads in the last week. I just tried again - selecting about 20 songs from a list of 33 Alice in Chains hits from 5-6 different sources. All went to Couldn't Download just seconds after trying to connect. I can't get the settings problem to happen again - sorry to waste your time on that one. Your service is great on this, Adam! I'll buy the Pro version just to support you guys (even though I hear it doesn't work right). |
Thanks for getting back to me. Are you completely sure that you have the right version? I ask because in 2.0 and about the download failure message is "Could Not Download" and not "Couldn't Download," but I'm not sure how precise you were being about that message. You can see the version you're running in the Help>>About window. Thanks very much again for your help in debugging these problems. I'm changing a couple of things on the OSX version that should make it a bit nicer for the next major release. |
Happy to help - I'll help you guys whenever I can. The version is 2.1.3 - and it says "Could Not Download." Sorry for my gramatical slip. Is there anything in your information that describes the color coding in the results window? Oh - I actually got some successes when I went to download this time - just two out of 15+ though - musch less than my usual success rate. Thanks! |
Same Problems, Looking for Help Last week I upgraded, at the prompting of the program, to Limewire 2.1.3. Since that time, I have hand nothing but problems. I've had it! I want my old Limewire back. I went on line to see if I could download an older version and found none. So here I am in the forum and what do I discover? I'm not the only one with these problems. Here is what I am experiencing: 1) 98% of my download attempts come back as Could Not Download within seconds. Love the speed, but the results are ridiculous. Same downloads with older version didn't have this problem. 2) The Preferences (Options) didn't save the first few times I changed them. Then they did. I have no idea why they decided to work the 4th time I changed them. 3) The program has little bugs that do not repeat. Crashes on my machine or locks up with amazing frequency-- and OSX has been pretty stable for me and the older version. The last straw was a bug that didn't recognize the mouse click for starting a download. Everything else worked but that--when I finally got a file to start downloading, the whole program collapsed on me. I really like this program and was considering paying for the pro version, but not after this experience. I would like my old version back and will wait until the new version has all of these bugs exterminated before I consider upgrading. Thank you for you time and attention and whatever assistance you my provide. |
Thanks to everyone for the feedback. One the first color-coding question, there are the following two color codes in the search window: 1) Green coding for the speed indicates that it is a speed that we have measured on that host by tracking its bandwidth. If the speed is not green, it means it's just the speed setting that the user specified. Basically, the green just means it's a more accurate estimate of speed. 2) The red encoding for ip addresses indicates that the host returning that search result is firewalled, and that it is therefore somewhat less likely that you will be able to download from them. This entire column, however, will likely be removed in future releases. Three stars in the "Quality" column also indicates that the host is probably firewalled. I would not consider this too seriously, however, as firewalled hosts often give excellent download speeds. |
In response to the second post, thanks very much for the thorough feedback. It sounds like you're a little upset, so I appreciate the controlled and detailed post that will help me improve the situtation for future releases! I'll respond point by point: 1) Download success- Several users have reported similar problems, and I will definitely investigate this. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that there might be some issue with permissions if you have multiple users on your machine. Do you definitely have write permissions for your download directory? 2) Preferences issues- I think a lot of Mac users may get confused by our user interface here. Basically, clicking the "X" is considered cancelling your changes. To apply your changes, you need to either press the "Apply" or the "OK" button. I realize that this is not the standard way of doing things for the Mac, and we may change it in the future. It's really the only operating system that does it that way, and LimeWire is all the same code base for all platforms. I also personally feel that the OK or Apply button schemes is better user interface design, but that's just my view. Could that have been the problem? 3) Other little bugs Can you identify any specific circumstances under which freezing occurs? On the mouse click issue, we are aware that there can be some problems here. As far as crashes go, it is also possible that you were an "UltraPeer," which can be more taxing on your system. You can disable this in the Options window. Also, what is the configuration of your system? (G3, G4, RAM) |
Solutions not so easy... Mr. Fisk, Thanks for the timely response. I am quite upset, but acting like a raving lunatic isn't going help either of us. I have friends who are programmers and friends who work in tech support. I respect both fields as having knowledge I do not and try to act accordingly. Here are the responses to you suggestions. 1) No, I do not have multiple users. Nor did I have multiple users when I had the earlier version of Limewire. The only thing on my system that has changed is the updating of Limewire. Yes, I have write permissions for my download directory. 2) While I am not a programmer, I am not one of these dunder head users that seem to plague tech support people, either. I am aware of and know how to use both platforms. I was not confused by the interface. I clicked apply and then OK when I was done making my changes. I am at a loss to explain the lack of consistency in this complaint. To be honest, its not a large complaint. The program did finally accept the changes and keep them. I included it only because most programmers want to know anything unusual that a user has experienced with their program. I am much more concerned by the reduced ability to download files. No arguements from me on which is a better interface. I feel its the user's responsibility to know the machine and to follow the cues. If you program the cues well (Apply button seems to be pretty obvious to me) then you have no worries on design. Of course, the problem still existed-- but its up to you whether or not it is of concern. In answer to your question, NO user error was not the source of this bug. 3) I am aware of the Ultra Peer disabling button. I confess to not knowing what Ultra Peer means. Please enlighten me and I will see if it applies to me. As to conditions-- no patterns emerged. Sometimes it happened when I had other programs running. I quit the other programs and it happened again. I restarted my machine and started the program and it quit again-- repeatedly. The mouse thing happened with no warning and while everything else worked. The download problem seems to be more prevalent with video and images, but does affect audio downloads as well. I have a G3 IMac and have a DSL connection (I forget the actual speed, I had two choices and I chose the lower speed). I am running OS X vrs. 10.1.2. Again, I thank you for your quick response. I hope this answers your questions. Can you answer mine? Where can I download and earlier version of Limewire until such time as these bugs have been addressed and fixed? |
os10 I'm new to this, but noticed I had no problem runnnng the os9 version, but was never sucessful with the os10 version. I had changed from the default directory setting at initial setup. I changed it back to the default and was sucessful at first attempt. |
also having download issues with 2.1.3 My downloads are also failing with 2.1.3 lots of search results though I am sole user, with admin privilages sharing is on with multiple mp3's for the taking, "I am not nor have I ever been a FREELOADER." to paraphrase somebody else: "(1) using LimeWire 2.1.3 on Mac OS X (2) I am behind the OS X firewall - Brickhouse activated (3) I try not to select IPs that are red (i.e., IPs behind a firewall) (4) I tried (and failed) to find the answer at the gnutella's forum for the answer (5) 90-95% of the times I try to download, LimeWire tells me "Connecting to ..." and then "Could not connect". " Using a cable modem and Comcast. MoreForUs under VPC works fine, but I'd like to stick with OS X, and can't find much Mac stuff on MoreForUs. Before the upgrade to 2.1.3 the GUI was flakey (redraws) but I had more consistant downloads. Now the GUI's better but the downloading SUCKS. I was going to upgrade to Pro - but will now wait for a more reliable version. To repeat, the previous 2.x version was working great, actually got a 400mb+ download, but now can't get a simple mp3 or even 1kb files with any regular success with 2.1.3 What's going on? cg ----- (Amazon's pro forma profits last quarter were $35 million.) Amazon attributed the profit to gains in its international units (yes, Virginia, there is a global economy) and to cutting of costs in a variety of ways, including switching its servers over to Linux. (That move prompted a wonderful quote from a Microsoft spokesperson in a News.com article: "With Linux, customers end up being in the operating systems business, managing software updates and security patches while making sure the multitude of software packages don't conflict with each other." And just how would that be different from Windows? |
A couple of questions for users having these problems: 1) Are you using the same save directory in this version that you used with the last one? 2) The last version that worked so well for you was 2.1.2 or another? Do you remember? 3) Are you sharing on a drive different from your main hard drive? Thanks. |
Also, can you try downloading the slightly older version from here: http://www9.limewire.com/download/2.1.1/LimeWireOSX.sit just to make sure that it's still working better? It's possible that something on the network changed. Thanks again. |
re: a couple of questions Adam, >A couple of questions for users having these problems: >1) Are you using the same save directory in this version that you used with >the last one? yes, a folder on the desktop >2) The last version that worked so well for you was 2.1.2 or another? Do you remember? it would have been whatever the most recent rev before 2.1.3 was that version tracker alerted me about - can't tell you exactly >3) Are you sharing on a drive different from your main hard drive? no, only one measly 20gig drive on my rig >Thanks. you're welcome to illustrate the intermittancy of the problem, last night I could download two mp3s and another 10Mb file, very fast and no problem, all at the same time. This morning, it's still working good. at other times I'll try for hours with no success. all other apps (IE, Entourage v.X, Eudora, Transmit, Dreamweaver) work fine. I'll try to watch what is happening more closely, but things are real simple here, just me and my cable modem. Maybe the fact that Comcast is transitioning from the Excite servers to their own as we speak has something to do with it. as soon as downloads become more reliable I'll go Pro, that's a promise. cg |
Limewire 2.1.3 for MacOS X also deletes downloads Hi, I am using LimeWire 2.1.3 on a 350 MHz G4 running MacOS 10.1.2 with 448 MB RAM, connecting via broadband internet access as an Ultrapeer. My problem is that Limewire seems to randomely delete downloads in progress or the download is marked completed but the associated file is gone. This seems to be a common problem as it has happend to me quite often recently. For example: Two downloads were 63% and 88% complete when suddenly the Progressindicator went back to zero. I checked my incomplete folder and the files are gone. Another time the d/l was going smoothly according to the progress indicator, but when I checked, there had been no file created by limewire. On a other ocassion I resumed a d/l but instead of appending it erased the original and started with 0%. This mostly happens with rather large files (100MB+), but is also happening with smaller files. I then checked, via Sherlock, to see whether the files were just misplaced by LimeWire or invisible, but to no avail. Needless to say this behaviour disturbs me a little as I fear for my data's integrity. Best Regards, Sam P.S.: I think you guys are doing a great job otherwise. |
New (Old) Version, Still Problematic AFisk, In answer to you questions: 1) Yes, I am using the same directory. It is a folder on my desktop. 2) I am not sure, but if I remeber correctly, the last version I had was 1.7. IF this make no sense, then disregard it. I do know that the last version I had that worked did not prompt for upgrading to Pro and did not have ads on the bottom of the window. 3) Nope. Not sharing on a different drive. I downloaded 2.1.2 from the link you provided. I have not noticed any obvious bugs as of yet, but have not run it through its paces yet. I have noticed that, unfortunately, the download failure rate is the same as it was with 2.1.3. (Download failure rate is in the high 90% range). Anyone know where I can get an even older version of Limewire? My wife uses the computer primarily for music downloads and investigation of songs before she buys CD's. She finally noticed yesterday that Limewire isn't working anymore. The clock is ticking for me now and my domestic tranquility is in some small amount of peril. Please help. Cooperatively, Craig |
This seems to be the thread to post under: My system: Titanium g4 500mhz, 512 ram, 20gig hd, without partitions, dsl, norton personal firewall (with ping protection enabled). Only one user and I have admin access. I installed Limewire in HD --> applications, and save files in "shared" file in the limewire folder. I assume this is the standard method of using LW. I have been using limewire since 1.7, updating whenever I see a new non-beta version on the site. I have made no changes to LW regarding hosts. Bugs on 2.1.3: 1. Options preferences not saved (have had this problem on and off on all the new releases after 1.7) -- I choose "four stars," "cable or higher," "no LW mp3 player," "max downloads 12," hit "apply" and then "ok." These changes return to default when I choose quit from menu. Putting the "connections" button in the menu bar, also doesn't save. -- How are you supposed to quit limewire? Are you supposed to choose "close?" This just hides lw in the dock. Are you supposed to choose "quit" from the menu? 2. Other preferences don't hold within the program -- column sizes/order. 3. Redrawing is better in 2.1.3 than the previous release, but still way worse than 1.7. 4. "Could not download" messages on many of my downloads. This actually doesn't seem out of the ordinary from previous issues (perhaps occuring a tad more frequently). 5. Downloads frequently just hang (either at start, or midway through a download) at 0kb/sec. This seems to happen more often if I put LW in the dock, or keep it in the background while I work in other applications (os X internet applications, or realplayer running in classic for example). "Resume" download doesn't affect these files. I would like a button in addition to the "kill download" one -- "stop download," "pause download," or "refresh download." 6. We need an "on deck" window, where files go after you choose them from the search menu. This window would remember file names and IPs. You would then select files from this window when you actually wanted to download them. This way you could easily retry downloads. It would also let you "remember" multiple files from the same IP, so that several files were all not vying for the "busy" host. 7. When you quit limewire, all the files you carefully searched for and queued to download, disappear. I would like all the files in that lower frame to be saved until the next session, not just the ones currently downloading. peace |
2.1.3 crashes constantly (reproducible) Post title pretty much says it. Limewire was pretty stable in the last relese I ran (2.1.0 - I used to run it with 35 ultrapeer connections and it would last a day or more), but has suddenly gone downhill. I am running on a dual-G4 800MHz running OSX.1.2 Crashes generally happen under heavy load, such as when I "select all" in a 200-result search and click "download". Crashes also occur spontaneously, though less often than when i am trying to download. My only thought is that this might be a memory error - I only have 256MB of RAM, and the large number of threads used by LimeWire might suck enough memory overhead to cause a problem, especuially due to the excessive (?) number of connections I keep up. Ideas? <note> This is a repost from another thread, since this seems to be the only thread to get replies. </note> |
