burning to dvd on Mac OSX

Most every download that comes up is from avi, whatever that is anyways I burn it to a dvd and it doesn't play back on my dvd player. I have Mac OSX. Is there a certain dvd brand I should be using or a program that will let it play back? Please I am so annoyed with this.
