Smile how to open/install a .rar file

Hello All,

Can anybody instruct me on how to open/install a .rar file? i have tried opening it using the usual way and the stuffit expander program opens up but doesnt seem to open the programme.

This seems to happen with all files of this type-is it something i am doing wrong or a problem with the stuffit software-i have just downloaded the newest version.

Thanks!

Sorry I'm not paying enough attention to the forum name!

What file types are we talking about? Generally when I extract a .rar file, I look for .exe files that will open an application.

FYI, it is recommended that you 'scan' all files that you download before opening them, although I never have...I have McAfee software, and it caught all of the viruses that I downloaded before I knew better. AFAIK, you are the most likely to get viruses by downloading .exe files directly, although many .rar and .zip files will contain viruses also. Many people would advise not downloading ANY of these file types.

Good Luck

Dano

In case no one has already told you, there's a program I use called UnRarX which is also free. It has it's own website forums (fora?) etc. Just type name into Safari.

Cheers,

Another is RAR Expander but I think Unrar is better. I will try zipeg to see how it goes with the password protected rar files.

BTW OSX comes with it's own zip opener. Just select the file, go to file menu, choose open with ... Bomarchivehelper. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/230927-post2.html
