Default Mac Limewire/iTunes Problem

Hi all. Please help. I have Limewire Pro on my home Mac and the Free version (4.18.3) on my machine at the office. It has always worked fine. I have recently upgraded to Mac OSX 10.5.1 on both machines. When I now download tracks from Limewire, they no longer go into the Limewire playlist in iTunes. Limewire tells me that the tracks have downloaded fine, but the tracks won't play at all (MP3). I can't get Limewire to "Preview" play them as they used to while downloading either, and I also cannot see the tracks in the iTunes at all. DOES SOMEONE HAVE AN ANSWER FOR ME?

iTunes 7.7 has made changes that has made it incompatible with any version of LW. It will still import the songs, but the shared library will no longer work in iTunes. If you look around the mac sections you will notice this has already been discussed.

Answer is either downgrade your iTunes to an earlier version, else, after adding your songs to iTunes to create a playlist that is shared on your network. You could for example share your Recently Added playlist. Check your iTunes preferences -> Sharing for which playlists to share.

iTunes does still auto-import the LW songs to its Music Library if you have LW set to do this.

I recommend iTunes Music Library set to Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding songs (under Advanced option of iTunes Preferences.)

Default Mac Problem

Thanks for the info. I will give that a try. Can you explain why when downloading a song in LW, I cannot even "preview" play the songs? Surely that has nothing to do with iTunes.

Mr Lord of the Rings, I have tossed iTunes 7 and re-installed iTunes 6 from scratch. I checked all my music as Shared in the preferences menu. I have downloaded the same song into iTunes to test it. It does now come through into the LW playlist, but the track will still not play. The track is 5,5mb so it has downloaded in full!? I still can't play it in LW in the "preview" mode either.

Check whether the song plays in other players. There are some dud or corrupt files being spammed over the network. See Alternate Audio Players & support plug-ins. Keep in mind iTunes cannot play mp3pro files (was a format designed for getting the best out of encoding at smaller bit rates.)

Likewise, sometimes my LW media player simply doesn't work with any song. I cannot explain why.

I figured out the iTune/Limewire problem yesteday. I figured out the solution to Gary's problem. I am running OX 10.5.4, iTunes 7.7.1, and LimeWire Basic 4.18.6. iTunes gave me the same problem as it did to Gary. So here's how to get your Limewire downloads into iTunes. Locate your LimeWire folder in your user folder on your Mac hard drive. Open it up and open up the enclosed "saved" folder which holds all your downloaded LimeWire songs. Double-click on the song you want to import into iTunes. iTunes will then launch and the song will begin to play. You can then add it to the particular playlist you want to put it in. It's a little extra work than before, but it works. Good Luck!

Yes iTunes 7.7 has not prevented files being added correctly to it's Music Library. Simply made the LW's playlist incompatible with the main iTunes music library.

I've found iTunes 7.6 I think it is from memory (just shut that computer down) on my old G4 (dual osx boot) from OSX 10.3. It's not the installer but the program. Not sure if it will work simply replacing the iTunes 7.7 with the 7.6 version but worth a try (since many OSX programs include the support files within the actual program package). I will upload it & make the link available tomorrow.

Windows users reported success using either the Windows iTunes version 7.0 or 6 after uninstalling their iTunes 7.7
Unfortunately I cannot find a mac old versions installer web page so will upload myself for anybody interested.

Hi, I have a similar (or maybe the exact same?) issue as what is being discussed here.. I have a brand new MacBook (OS X 10.5.4) <with wireless internet> and on it I have iTunes 7.7.1. Also in my house, I have another computer that has LimeWire 4.18.6 - it was just downloaded onto that computer today, and then several songs were downloaded into LW today, too. I just turned on my Mac and opened up the iTunes and a message popped up saying that my Mac was trying to communicate with the other "LimeWire Tunes." After a few minutes of trying to connect, a message popped up saying "The shared library "My LimeWire Tunes" is not compatible with this version of iTunes."

I guess I'm not sure what do to because 1) I had no idea that my iTunes on my Mac would be able to do something as cool as connect with LimeWire from another computer; and 2) Im working with two different computers. Any advice as to how I could get those songs from LW on the one computer to my iTunes on my Mac would be greatly appreciated!

Good & bad news. I discovered that my older iTunes 7.3.2 from Panther OSX 10.3 is not compatible with my newer intel mac. O.o So this will apply to all others out there with intel macs I presume.

The following file is only for those who are not using intel macs: iTunes 7.3.2 (NOT for intel mac computers) - (click on link). (Reminder, this is simply the program, not the installer, so trash your other iTunes out of applications folder first, may need to reboot to empty trash. Then copy the iTunes 7.3.2 from the disk image (after double-clicking the dmg file) to the Applications folder.) This file is zipped so will need to unzip it first. To open the zip file, go to File menu & choose Open with ... BOMArchive assistant or whichever similar option shows. If you have stuffit expander then it will be easier.

To download the above file, click on link, then click on the Request Download Link that shows on the page, then on following page click the Download file button.

* Warning: This may not work so just keep in mind. It might refuse to read the iTunes Music library file. So feedback welcome.

* I deleted my iTunes on my intel, reinstalled iTunes (7.6) from Leopard intel installation disk, received error that it could not read iTunes music library file since it was created by a later version of iTunes. So at this point I am not sure how to fix this issue for everyone. If anybody has any ideas, please feel welcome to put them forward.

I think iTunes sucks nowadays. Had many problems with the program since about version 7 came out on my old computer. Which includes lost files, songs losing their title or artist or album information (eg: missing the last few letters of the album name or missing the song or disk number or all those combined issues. Had this issue on my intel also.)
