Cannot open Limewire on Mac OSX 10.4.11

Hi guys. Im hoping someone can really help me..
I am a bit of a Mac novice and am having problems with Limewire. I am running Mac Tiger 10.4.11 and have downloaded the latest version of Limewire for Mac from official LW website.
When i try to install, it takes FOREVER for setup to complete, but it eventually does.
When i then go to my applications folder and double click on the LW startup icon, the LW logo bounces up and down a couple of times in my Object Dock and then disappears and the program doesn't open at all.
I thought this may be down to a Java problem, so 1) I performed a software update on my Mac and installed latest Java version. Then Limewire told me it needed v5.0 or above to work. So I went back to java and downloaded v.50 for mac, but still to no avail...
Every other program on my mac works fine - just limewire! Does anybody know what the problem could be?
Just as a final thought....
When i click on the Limewire command within the MACOS folder, this is what appears in Terminal:

[LaunchRunner Error] The main class "com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main" could not be found.
[JavaAppLauncher Error] CallStaticVoidMethod() threw an exception
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.run(LaunchRunner.java: 85)
at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.callMain(LaunchRunner. java:50)
at apple.launcher.JavaApplicationLauncher.launch(Java ApplicationLauncher.java:52)
logout
[Process completed]"

Thanks so much for any help....

Did you move Java 1.5 up to the top of the list?: Setting up Java 1.5 :)

Hi there!
Just looked at your post, and yes Java 5 is top of my list (well in fact i don't have a drop down menu option to pick a Java version as such - i only have 2 radio buttons - either J2SE 1.4.2, or J2SE 5.0
Could you help me?
Thanks

I have the same exact problem macuser101. I have moved Java 1.5 to top. It didn't help.

I run mac OS 10.4.11. I downloaded a new version of limewire but it won't open or connect. I didn't have a problem before running the old version. I deleted the old version including the preference setting. I noticed that new version does not install and new preference folder. I am thinking this is the problem. If you think so, how do I restore the preference setting? I have deleted and installed limewire 4 times. No change.

I need help.

thanks, tmak

Which version of LW did you try to install?
Is it LW 4.18 or LW 5?
LW 4.18 requires Java 5 (1.5) so you need to make sure that's near the top in your Java preferences, found in your Utilities folder. :)

So basically if we're using 10.4.11 we can't use version 5.0

Since I've already installed 5.0 I'm screwed. (I think the reason I went to Tiger in the first place a few years ago was so I could get Limewire to work. I'm not upgrading OS's again for that.)

So can we still download the previous version? (even though it was only working "so-so" ??

Thanks for reply. The version I have reinstalled is 4.18.8 (the one compatible with OS 10.4.11). It still doesn't work. I think it has to do with preferences setting. Do you know how to restore that?

I'm happy again... for now. I just remembered I had a copy of 4.18.8 on a backup HD.

Sadly of course... I will be stuck with it until I can afford a new computer, which won't be any time soon.

I wouldn't cry too much about missing out on the new version. There's been many complaints because LW left out many tools. And navigating can be confusing for users.

Which version of LW were you running before you updated to 4.18.8? On my system, I cannot get LW 4.18 or 5 to run. However I was able to get them to run on a different OSX installation on a different drive. So you'd think the answer would be reinstalling OSX, however I've done that. Not a reformat install however.

I presently use LW 4.16 on one OSX & 5 on the other.

Have you ever been able to run 4.18.x?

I don't remember which version of LW I had running before. I will try to download 4.16.
