Weird occurrence, -d/l's way past file size

Just d/l'd a file that was supposed to be 58,162 KB but when that number was reached the progressbar was only halfway through, and d/l cont'd for about an hour at approx. 5 KB/S.
Has my poor Mac been invaded by gremlins? Has anyone else noticed this?
