Can't get Limewire 5 to open I had been using version 4.? and proceeded to dl 5. I am running MAC OS 10.5.6. Limewire 5 won't open and it tells me I need a new version of Java or something : "this application require a 1.6+ version of Java." is the message I get...but when I searched for that I found nothing. Also, my old version of Limewire seems to be gone now. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jared |
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/mac-os...0-5-later.html unfortunately LW 5 only runs on the newer intel computers that are capable of running 64-bit java. Earlier macs are only 32 bit. :( |
I am using a 2 yr old Mac Book Pro with 2.16 Intel Core Duo processor, and 10.5.6 OS. Any other ideas :) ? |
I think the earlier intel machines were not 64-bit capable. Just to check, go to Apple menu top left of menu bar, choose Software update ... and see if any Java updates. Then if installations or not, go to Utilities folder & open up Java preferences; Setting up Java for Leopard (the 2nd image). If you see no Java 1.6 (6) listed in your Java preferences, then your computer is not 64-bit java compatible & that's why you cannot install LW. ;) I hope that's not the case, but let's see. :) If Java 6 (1.6) is listed, then move it up the list & try again with installing. :) Frankly, there's several functions missing from LW 5 that were in LW 4. Many people have complained as it's not easy to navigate as before. It looks quite different. |
I'm having the same problem....nothing was wrong I just updated to lw5 and now tells me I need Java 1.6 but when I try to load that it tells me I need 10.5 . I have 2007 iMAC intel core duo 2. I tried to reinstall 4.10. of limewire and it won't let me do that either.....HELP!!!!! |
Firstly you need a 64-bit intel mac. Not sure if your imac is, but should be. Secondly you need OSX 10.5, if you wish to use LW 5. Otherwise, you will need to downgrade to LW 4.18. To do that, remove the install limewire.pkg file found in the Receipts folder found at OSX -> Library -> Receipts. Sample: Receipts folder sample image |
thank you, that helped. but i guess i lost everything that was downloaded, huh?Dagnyhttp://www.gnutellaforums.com/images/smilies/idea.gif |
no, all files that were 100% downloaded will still be on your computer. Perhaps in a different location. Just need to check your computer via search. Else perhaps they do not show up in library because they are not being shared. ;) |
I had the same problem opening Limewire 5 with my iMac with Intel core 2 duo, running 10.5.6. It was still using the default 32-bit Java, so I went to the MacintoshHD>Utilities>Java>Java Preferences. I saw that Java SE6 was in the list, but not at the top. It must have previously been downloaded during a software update, but was not the Java in use. I dragged Java SE6 to the top of the lists for both the applet versions and application versions. I downloaded Limewire 5 again and it worked. What a relief. |
I can not open mine either have been here for hours try to find the prob grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr even have started my computer a couple of times my have to come back to it later |
Java 1.6 I don't see Java 1.6 in list or anything like it. The closest I see is: J2SE 1.4.2 32-bit or java SE6 64-bit. Where do I get Java 1.6? |
Mortfe, refer to my post (#9) just a couple of posts back. Use Java SE6 and drag it to the top of the lists. |
Brian, I already tried that. Dumped everything that said Limewire & installed v5. Didn't help. Unless there are hidden files. |
Yes Java SE 6 is Java 1.6. Not sure why they use two ways of referring to them. eg: JRE5 or J2SE 5.0 = Java 1.5, etc. Personally I am unable to run LW 4.18 or LW 5 on my main OSX operating system. I installed another OSX on a partition I had previously set up for Windows XP (the installation of XP corrupted a few times so gave up after misplacing the installation disk.) Reformatted that partition, installed OSX with updates & LW 4.18 & then LW 5 have run well. I did do 3 archive re-installations of OSX last year on my main drive so looks like something was wrong with the original installation. I should have chosen "Erase and Install" option but didn't wish to have to reinstall all my applications again. lol :D So now I run 4.16 on main OSX, LW 5 on other OSX drive-partition. And LW 5 on Windows XP via Parallels, which IMHO is better & more convenient than having to reboot into XP or using the old Virtual PC. I can share files directly between both Windows & OSX using LW, & drag & drop files between desktops also. (My Windows XP is now the 64-bit version which BootCamp does not allow using. BootCamp only allows XP 32-bit or Vista.) |
Yep, I paid for 10.5.2 Pro, no mention it wold not work on Java 5, just stated, after I had paid and downloaded and tried to open, I needed to download Java 6 which will not work on my iMac. Try asking for your money back! I will never, ever bother with these cheats again. Sorry LW but your information to users before purchasing is minimal in the least. No good once we have paid and downloaded telling us it will not work (well, actually, you have never told me as you never answer my emails, I have to rely on the honest folk in the forums). Goodbye, LW and good riddance! I shall try Acquisition or Pirate Bay, you have had your final cent from me. |
1 Attachment(s) LW have added some warnings, but they are not necessarily obvious to everyone. Especially since many people will not know whether they have 64-bit machines or not. Only the mac intel machines released past couple of years & perhaps the macbooks over past 12 months (not sure about macbooks.) I've squashed the image sample below up a little to show the pro purchase page warning. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...rchase-osx.gif But if I may say, at present you are not losing anything by not being able to use LW 5. Only thing you miss out upon is the Friends option. LW 4 has many more tools than LW 5. It will probably not be until end of year before LW 5 re-introduces the tools that LW 4 has. And that's only via pressure some of us have been putting upon the Developers. lol :D LW wanted to simplify the program, but in its present state is far too simplistic, so much so that even many new Windows users have been downgrading to LW 4. ;) LW 5 has been getting the thumbs down from probably the majority of users. |
