Default LW Using All Available Ram

Hey,
I'm trying to help out a friend with a LW issue.
He's been using LW Pro for about a month no problems until about a week ago. Now if he selects more then about 5 files (mp3 or other audio) to download at once LW will freeze. Sometimes display a whitescreen. And othertimes after about 20minutes it could go back to working like normal.

OS: Mac OS 10.5.7 all the latest updates.
Using LWPro 5.1.4(i may be off but it's the latest version i know).
MacBook 2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2gb ram
320gb hard drive with about 250gb left.

I turned on Mac OS's activity monitor right after a restart to track the problem. about 512mb or less of ram is used. As soon as limewire is started it jumps up to about 1gb used. And as soon as you click to download anything it eats up all remaining ram until only 15mb is left available. And the whole system will begin to freeze due to obvious reasons.

I tried trashing the preference folder and re-installing the whole application with no luck.

Any suggestions? Any reason it would take up all available memory?

thanks,
-bp

Options I can think of are (a) disabling some of the advanced features, (b) reducing incomplete files, (c) reducing shares if many, (d) making sure Java is up to date.

(a) Disabling ultrapeer, DHT & TLS options are found under prefs -> Advanced -> Super really Advanced -> Performance.
(b) With LW 5, incomplete files can be removed by simply canceling the downloading file.
(c) Too many image files in Library can slow LW down considerably. Next culprit is audio files. Simply control-click file in library to remove from library.
(d) Check OSX's Soft. Update tool.
