Before OS X, I considered myself at least a little Mac-savvy, though certainly not a techie. I hated clutter on my computer and in my System folder. I was always looking for things to toss. (Hard drive size was still an issue then.) I'm sure there was a proper way to uninstall software back then, but I'd just trash whatever I didn't need.

After OS X, I did the same thing and pretty much killed my computer. It was NEVER right after that. So unless there's an actual uninstall program, old software just sits on my computer taking up space (which there's plenty of, so no biggie).

When I upgraded to Limewire 5.1.4, it overwrote 5.1.2 Everything in my library remained intact. Precisely the result I was looking for.

I have a "duh" type question. When I download software, I get a device type icon on my desktop. I hate clutter on my desktop. If I wanted that, I'd have a PC. I thought the icon was just the installer, so I tossed it. But then Limewire wouldn't work, so I had to reinstall it. I'm guessing the icon IS Limewire or an important part of it. Do I have to leave it on my desktop or can I put it somewhere else?

I also have a Skype icon. Same question.

An Alias you mean? (similar to Windows Shortcut icon)
It is simply a reference icon that is linked to opening the program. It is not compulsory for any program. I only use an alias for Parallels desktop. You have alternate choices. Leave the LW icon in the Dock. Control-click LW icon in Dock & choose Keep in Dock. I personally don't like too many items in my Dock. Only the programs I use the most.

Else, something I like to use is a 3rd party program called Butler. It is a menu option that appears on apples menu bar. I used to use a similar system on OS 7 - 9 with apple menu items. With Butler, I have created sections for p2p software, graphic software, fav folders, etc. When setting up Butler it can be wise to go to configure options & disable or lower some of the ram hungry options. Butler. You can customise it as you please.



You should never remove items from the Receipts folder. The system needs those files when repairing permissions & checking original file with receipt, etc. Only exception is if you are downgrading a program to an earlier version. Not all, but most programs install a receipt file (those that use an installer).

No, I don't think the icons are Aliases. In OS X, don't the Aliases have a little arrow at the bottom left of the icon? The icons I'm talking about look like little hard drive or device icons. I thought they were just the installer apps, but stuff tends to stop working if I toss them.

I didn't even know I had a Receipts folder, so I've certainly never removed anything from it. I learned my lesson about OS X and messing with the System folder that one time when I tried to mess with it like it was still OS 9. I'll never do that again.

If I really feel that I must do something of that nature, I'll ask someone who knows more than me or I'll RTFM.

Disk Image files .. mounted DMG files. That's where the installers are.

There are some programs which you simply copy from the disk image to your application folder. Within the disk image it usually says to drag & drop to your app folder. But LW does not use that technique, it only has the installer on the disk image.

Okay, that's what I thought it was. Limewire is safely installed in my Applications folder. Can I just toss the disk image?

I won't toss the one for Skype, not until I figure out whether it's needed.

I know, in the past, I've had to reinstall some software after tossing the disk images even though I thought the installation was successfully accomplished.

Sometimes I miss OS 9.
