Hi holidaymell,

I'm not a Mac user but these links might have some useful info until a Mac user can reply. Using the forum search might also help you to find more info :)

.zip archives open useless .exe files

If Apple OSX's Archive Utility cannot open it I'd be a little concerned. Just select the zip file, go to File menu, choose open with ... Archive Utility or what it's called for your version of OSX. Stuffit Expander is a 3rd party option of course.

As for downloading programs for OSX, try to find out what size the file should be first so you have an idea what size you should be looking for so can exclude spam or rubbish from your search results.
Searching .dmg under a program search can help to find mac specific program files.

Installing: Generally mac programs are on a dmg (disk image file) which should be opened thus mounted on desktop (open the disk image if the folder inside is not already opened). Then the installer file will be inside. Depends on program. Some are installers, some you simply drag and drop the program to your applications folder. There should be a Read Me file inside which explains about this. Most mac programs have support files built inside the program package itself, thus no installation necessary. Some programs require support files to be installed to the system folders.

Im still stuck. I dont know what to do still. It wont allow me to use archive utility. Maybe its a windows file? I use stuffit expander to open the zip file then when I open that folder theres a setup.exe and a .nfo Icon. Im guessing these are use to install on windows not macs. Am I Right????

yes, .exe files are strictly windows only programs.

Possibly put into search tab OSX or Mac after your other search term. Filter out sizes below 1, 5, or 10 MB perhaps depending on the normal size of what you are seeking. Example, Freeware mac or Freeware for mac only

The size filter can be handy to remove spam, but really depends on the normal size of what you are seeking. Some program files are around the 1-5 MB size, some are packages that are multiple 100 MB's in size.

I found better results using OSX's LW compared to using Windows LW. Just searching .dmg or mac with a Program type search seemed to bring some true results. Also, use the Find More Results option by Control clicking the search tab.
