How Do I Chat?

I'm using 2.1.3. I have chat enabled, but can't seem t get it to do anything. I read somewhere to ctrl click on a search result, but that doesn't work, nor does clicking on the Chat button. Is there something else I need to do.

Not all hosts are chatable. The Chat button only works on hosts that have a smiley under the chat column.
