limewire freezes entire computer a am using mac os 9.1 with norton personal firewall that is disabled when using limewire. after a search for programs, several appear but shortly thereafter, the computer freezes, i cannot use "force quit" to stop limeware and the only way to solve the problem is to do a hard shutdown using the power button. i have downloaded limeware several times and the same problem occurs each time. any suggestions? |

...or buy some more RAM - prices are real cheap these days. for the record, LimeWire needs 64 MB, on its own, to run on your system. there also could be an extension conflict on your system. FAXstf is one extension that has been known to conflict with LimeWire, and must be disabled, through Extensions Manger, when LimeWire is running. you can download a shareware app, called Conflict Catcher, to verify others. zbell |

limewire freezes entire computer thanks for the help. virtual memory is on. faxstf extensions were already disabled and i downloaded extensions conflict program. however, it does not detect any conflicts on routine test, limewire still does not work and i am not sure how to test the limewire program specifically. |

Wait. Let me get this straight. You are saying that in addition to the Java overhead, one should give LW 64 MB on its own, and further, that LW "requires" this? Roughly 32 times the default preferred amount? This little app. is NOT Photoshop... This is hardly news: Java on the Mac is a sometime thing, no matter how much memory you throw at it: windows redraw slowly or not at all, they will bleed through other apps. when the Java app. is not active, etc. etc. Freezing was a more serious problem in earlier versions, but the "force resume" button will sometimes cause a complete breakdown, corrupt the dl.dat file, and I can trash all incomplete downloads. Java is error intolerant: if two things try to happen simultaneously -- hardly a rare happening connecting and disconnecting and whatnot -- then danger lurks. Plus, this application is, I would imagine, being developed by people who only see a Macintosh in an IKEA catalogue. Unfortunately, it's all we have... |

i assure you, there are quite a few Macs among LimeWire folks, msyelf included, and they work pretty hard at getting the Mac versions of LimeWire running very smoothly. unfortunately, it's not always appreciated, but i'm glad for those that do show some love. having been a Mac technician for over seven years, but that's neither here nor there - i don't get into they-hate-us-Mac-folks discussions. however, the folks at LimeWire did not create Java, and you're right: Apple's implementation of Java is pretty buggy, but at the present time, i haven't heard anything about improving it anytime soon. so, sorry, this time, you imagined wrong zbell |

"I assure you, there are quite a few Macs among LimeWire folks," If that is the case, then why don't these "quite a few" simply abandon the Java platform as the wretched drawback it is and come up with a nice little carbonized app. that everyone on a Macintosh can use? With Macintosh commands (like apple+q or opt+click for contextual menus), something approaching normal file naming, a menu where it is supposed to go, a normal pref. file that is maintained over versions, and a bit better interface with the Finder? Do you find it a normal state of affairs when someone can advise giving this application 64MB of RAM? Is there something wrong with this picture?? Mactella was pretty bad, but was that the totally wrong direction to go? Why Java in the first place? What would be wrong with a separate client à la Carracho or iSwipe or any number of Mac clients that do similar things? Or if this sounds too ambitious, how about testing out all of Krieger's changes and making them Mac compatible? I don't mean to be unappreciative of your work, but we both realize that Michelangelo couldn't have sculpted David with a jackhammer. Last edited by Freiluft; July 30th, 2002 at 09:03 PM. |
