Unhappy corrupt sit files?

I dont know if someone has posted this already-- but this is an "advanced" mac question (i think)... i have a broadband connection at work, and dialup at home. So, it makes sense for me to download my files there and transfer them here. The problem is, at work i use windows2000, and at home i have macOS 9.1 and os X 10.0.4.

now for the question. How come all my .sit files are corrupted and all the .dmg ones arent?? How do i uncorruptify my .sit files?? I have even tried downloading .sit's within the macOS and have had a lot of problems with them. I currently have the latest version of Stuffit.. PLEASE HELP!!
thankyou in advance

Hello!

Which version of Stuffit are you using?.

I would recommend not to use the pay version instead go and download and install the free Stuffit Lite 6.5.1 package. http://www.stuffit.com

Then use the free Stuffit Expander to unstuff the .sit files.

If you are trying to open them from within the LW Shared folder then that might be your problem instead move the downloaded file to the desktop and realese it ontop of the Stuffit Expander alias icon and it should unstuff just fine atleast if the file have the proper .sit file extension added to it.If not then first open up Stuffit and from whitin the program go to the File menu and select the option Expand and then browse to your file which should be on the desktop and click choose/expand and it should expand just fine.

If not then the files you have downloaded might indeed be corrupted or it maybe something wrong with your computer.Check the integrity of your HD with Disk First Aid and also rebuild your desktop and zap PRAM using Tech Tool Lite.

im currently using expander 6.5.1... could it have something to do with a missing resourse file? I tried res-editing the file, and it gave me an error saying that the file didnt have a resourse fork. If i get info for file type, it gives me some garbage about a TEXT dosa file or something like that.

if i try opening the file in expander (both windows and macintosh versions) it says the file is corrupt and asks me if i want to continue. If i click on yes, it does nothing. I seriously find it very hard to believe that *every* .sit file i download is corrupt. Is there any kind of checksum / repair utility for .sit files?? i mean-- EVERY file?? thats kind of rediculous. and it doesnt even happen with .dmg (OSX) files... i dont get it

p.s. i have tried opening the files in both OSX and os 9.1 on 2 different computers.. both with no luck.
thanks again

Hello!

It seems like we have to go into some serious trouble shooting techniques!.

Are you sure that you are not using the pay version of Stuffit?

The pay version bealieve it or not actually performs much worse then the free version does.If you have the pay version then delete it from your system and download and install the free version.

Have you tried the different methods of opening the .sit files as I described in my previous response?.Sometimes it is impossible to expand files from whitin the LW shared folder and you have to move the file to the desktop before expanding and sometimes it is neccessary to drop the file on SE rather then just clicking the file and sometimes it is even neccessary to actually open up SE and then from whitin SE expand the file.

Have you as I described in my previous post checked your HD and performed the system cleaning operations as I described?(Has to be performed from whitin Classical Mac OS 9.X when booted into classic).

Do you have the Stuffit application installed in both Operative Systems?.

If not then make an installation in Classical Mac OS 9.X and then try it once again.

I would recommend you to download a new .sit file from Gnutella from your home computer and then once again try to expand it under Classical Mac OS and not Mac OS X.

If all this fails then it is time to check the Stuffit Expander preferences.

Open up Stuffit Expander without dropping any file on it.Then from the file menu select Preferences and then check the following settings:

Under Expanding make sure that the following settings are selected and checked

Expand Archives
Expand Encoded files
Continue to expand(If Possible)

Under Joining check that these options are checked:

Join Segmented files
Expand Joined File(If possible)

Under Disk Images check that the following option is checked:

Mount Disk Images

Under Destination make sure that the following options are checked:

Same As Original
When the archive contains multiple items

Under Watch Folder check that the following setting is correct:

Wait 0 minutes and check again.

Under Internet check that the following settings are correct.

Click the button Use Stuffit Expander for all available file types and then click ok and close Stuffit and the re start your computer for all the changes to take effect.

Now once again try to open up the .sit files using the methods I described in my previous post.

A .sit file downloaded on a Wintel box, transferred to a ISO CD, and then upacked on a Mac should work fine. Under no circumstances should you try to unpack on the Windows machine, as that will screw up the resource fork big time. A .sit has no resource fork, so it is safe to dl regardless of platform.

Usually, just dragging the .sit file to Expander (I've never encountered the problem that Joakim discusses) works fine. Nor have I ever experienced any complications with the pay versus free version of StuffIt, since they use the same components. You can also add the .sit suffix in File Exchange if it is not there already.

If you do, however, have the pay version, you might send an email to Aladdin explaining your problem if no other solution works. And if I hear "zap the pram" one more time...
