Angry Files don't open.

After downloading a file (any file, but very rarely Audio files aren't affected. Ditto with some Programs) the icon appears as a blank page with the top-right corner folded down, described only as a document. The size is correct. When I try to open them, I get the message "Could not find the application that created....." The only alternate options shown are Acrobat Reader & Avid Cataloger. I didn't have this problem until I swapped in a larger HD. I'm using OS 9.1 & Limewire 4.5 on a PowerMac 8500 W/G3 proc.
THANKS!

G'day from Oz

If you know what sort of file each one is supposed to be, then I suggest you find a similar file on your Mac, drop it on File Buddy, note the File Type & File Creator, then drop your blank file on and set it to the same.

Then, see if double clicking it will open it.

If not, I think you've got some sort of file corruption, rather than LimeWire or Finder not setting the file type etc. correctly (I'm not sure exactly what occurs at the start of a download).

You can also check each file as it downloads into LimeWires 'Incomplete' folder. The correct Icon should show there as soon as a download is queued.

If it doesn't, but re-setting a file opens it, then I think it's a Finder problem. If you've got a complete backup, a clean install might work.

Note that .asf files (Media Player) have the same problem, with their settings showing as '????' & '????'. They need setting to 'ASF_' & 'Ms01'.

Even then, a lot of .asf files freeze the Mac, and you can only play one file at a time.

Media Player sucks!

Best of luck!
