Strewth!!!! This topic has kept me busy.

I've already posted something like this a few times, and I've got lots of requests for help, so I'll post instead of answering everything.


If your tunes don't open or launch

Probably your 'automatically open with' preferences have been stuffed up somehow.

Download the droplets mentioned below, and try them.


If your songs are opening in Quicktime, but you want iTunes.....

Your QuickTime preferences are probably set to something like 'Use QuickTime to play internet music.'

You can re-set your files to iTunes using something like File Buddy.

The file type should show as .mp3, and set the file creator to 'hook'. Once you've done this, it will be added to FileBuddys pop-up choices.

The file should then play via iTunes, and be added to it's library. You can move it anywhere. Bit cumbersome though.

To automatically re-set downloads to iTunes, try setting the iTunes prefs to 'play internet tunes' and 'play automatically' (or something like that).


If your songs are opening in iTunes, but you want QuickTime.....

Go to..

Edit/Preferences/QuickTime Preferences

Then scroll to - Browser plug-in
and tick - Play movies automatically


The easy conversion way

The other way is to drop them on an Applescript droplet which will convert them, then automatically add them to the Library when you open them.

After opening, you can move them anywhere you like.

I keep the iTunes Applet in my LimeWire downloads folder to set any blank downloads, (the plain paper sheet), as well as aliases so I can just shunt them off to various sub-folders in my iTunes folder, eg.

Scotts downloads
Traceys downloads
My bloody downloads

Now, for the AppleScripts....

I have included a download link to a previously attached zip file that contains a sample script, and two droplets that will rapidly convert between iTunes and QuickTime.

They automatically filter out Folders, etc, and only accept mp3 format files.

The problem with just opening them into a library, as often suggested, is that if you open the unconverted tune, it still plays with the player the files set to.

Just a thought, but if you find the downloads useful, would you mind whacking a post in here please just to keep it at the top.

Wherever I've put these before, they've got buried.

Just a short 'Rack off' or something would do.

If you like the simple scripts, you might have further suggestions for anything you'd like scripted.

I'm working on a folder attachment for the downloads that...

• Automatically re-sets mp3 and LimeWire docs downloads into any player you like,

• by putting iT in the folder name, re-sets every included tune to iTunes when opening the folder, or dropping onto closed or open folder (closed uses Folder Actions +)

• does the same for Ma, Qu, Mp (guess)

• *trying* to do the same when closing the folder, so you can open in one format, and re-set back when closing.

• If you set the folder Label to 1, it will give you a speech report to tell you of the changes, (so it tells you in the background)

• Label to 2, gives dialog reports,

• Label to 3, turns off reports,

• Label to 0, when opening the folder, displays dialogs describing how to set it.

Think it would be useful? (grin)
