mpg/mpeg

I can't get the .mpg or .mpeg files I download with Limewire to open on my Mac. Quicktime will not play them - it says I don't have the necessary software component. I have the free Quicktime player - 6.0 I think. How can I play these files? Thanks.

G'day from Oz.

Go to the Apple site and try to find and download iTunes 2.x. (presumably you have system 9x installed).

It's by far the best player if to you learn how to use it's simple interface.

You might have to try and get it from a dealer, as 10 minutes searching Apple only shows links to iTunes 3, which requires os X.

Apple are pains in making life hard to locate old downloads. Also, it's often easier locating stuff on Apples site with Google. Apples search engine locates lots of documents, but little else.

Umm a mpeg or mpg (same thing) are huge use .avi much smaller if you eed help playing them go to www.3ivx.com any way for the mpeg go into your contole pannel (apple menue if you have 9 or below) click on quicktime settings then a window willl pop up go down to update and update everything. that should do the trick.

p.s. itues is a mp3 wav/aiff player/ripper that would get you no ware beucse you are trying to play a movie.

G'day

Unfortunately there's lots of different encoders for jpg/jpeg format, mainly PC ones. The p**n industry use them a lot, for instance.

Some simply won't open with QuickTime, but you usually get a message such as 'QuickTime is missing a component etc.'.

jpeg2 on QuickTime?? You need to buy the license, as Apple have to pay for each distribution they pass on.

They all show as jpg or jpeg.

File translation

I had the same problem. My files used to save as Quicktime files and all of a sudden they saved as blank documents and I couldn't play them. I was able to fix this by going into my control panel, file exchange and selecting the file type I download to translate as Quicktime Player or whatever software you want to use.

Hope this works for you!

Hi there,

I had the same problem and still have it, but some of them I can play with Windows Media player for Mac, but some I never could play.
I know that there's is the format mpeg 2 (.m2v) which isn't playable with normal registered Q.t. 6.0, I need extra plug-in, for which I have to pay. Ever when i download mpg or mpeg I don't know if it's really playable......
