new to limewire setup wizard failure Hi, My iMac PowerPC G3 OS 9.1 and I are new to limewire and have ?'s regarding my failure starting limewire pro 2.9.11 application with the setup wizard it begins in the dialog box, all that appears in the window is text but no back, next or cancel buttons and all that the main menu shows is help and when I click on help, a error message appears which reads with these exact words: The application LimeWire has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred. You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer. After all that I thought maybe it had something to do with the MJR 2.2.5 download but that failed with a error message with exact words: the ShrinkWrap engine has reported an error Error-60, so I went back to downloading limewire and MJR 2.2.5 and at the end of my first and then even a second attempt downloading error messages occurred... I need help figuring out what went wrong. doragilder limerwire service department haven't returned my emails |

Hi The report of a Type 2 Errors usually means either you have an Extension conflict or that you have insufficent memory to run the application. Have you installed any application that affects the standard Mac firewall. For example, I recently experimented with a package to control ports in the 4000+ range and had major problems across the whole firewall. These problems were almost completely eliminated when I uninstalled the package (I'm still searching for and eliminating odds bits of code down in root). Anyway, the moral is that, for most practical purposes, you should not mess with the standard Mac firewall. If you have, I recommend that you delete it and try Limewire again. Alternatively, it may be that you have not assigned enough memory to MRJ 2.2.5. Make sure that you have the maximum allowable value which is 32000. To make the change, highlight the MRJ icon and from file menu select Show Info, then Memory. This allows you to reset the maximum value to 32000, but don't touch the minimum value. After this re-start your Mac and run LW again. If it still fails, it may be a virtual memory problem but that's another story. BTW before downloading a new copy of Limewire, make sure you trash all elements of the version you are replacing. Use Finder to trash everything with Limew in the label and ensure a clean slate for each new download. |

Ummm? I thought I did explain it? but obviously not well enough. Mea culpa. I suppose I may have misremembered life under OS 9.1 and, unfortunately, my older iMac has decided not to co-operate tonight so I cannot actually run through the process to verify my recollection but, for what it's worth, I'll try again. Find the icon for MRJ and click on it once to select it for action. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, you will see File and one of the elements in the pull-down is Show Info. Click on that option. Within that dialog, you should see a Memory option where you can change the amount allocated to the selected application. I hope that's right. If not, post back and, hopefully, someone with a workable older machine can more accurately guide you through the process. Good luck |

The Apple Applet Runner is the app inside the MRJ 2.2.5 folder that can have the memory modified. I just booted the G4 into OS 9 and changed the memory to 64000. David--I thought you only had to change LW's memory allocation in 9--didn't think to change the Applet's runner. Thanks (even though I only use 9 now for troubleshooting!) |
