Default can't launch dld applications

I can get mp3s to play just fine but every application I've downloaded can't open. I can get them unzipped and sitting on my desktop but from there out it's no such luck. I get the same message everytime: unable to open because you don't have the application that created the file.

Of course I dont! That's why I'm using limewire in the first place! Is there a way around this that will open shared applications?

thanks for helpin'

dB

Hi db--what version OS and machine are you using? .zip and .exe are usually programs for Windows. Your mac will treat them as documents, not applications.

Too, be careful with "shared applications," and any shared file. Some are being illegally shared, and the names might be spam. LW is a file sharing tool--it doesn't control what files people choose to share.

Cheers

thanks stief,

I'm using os 9.2 but I have os X jag also with lw. I have been able to unzip .zip files with stuffit expander (I used to do it all the time whille making and dling maps for Rune, and it worked fine). I was trying to get a drum machine app using lw and after unzipping it, I got the folder sitting on my desktop with several different icons/files. when I tried to open any of them I got that message: "u don't have the app that created it".

easiest thing to do is google the app you're interested in evaluating and see if there's a Mac version available. This should also give you some idea of the size and name to expect. An indirect list of popular mac apps is Serial Box (usually updated the first of each month; e.g. Serial Box 8.2003). The other advantage of searching for Serial Box is that it's mostly for OSX, so the chances machines sharing it are Macs.

.dmg files are the newer way of sharing mac apps over the internet: they are pretty much disk image files for OSX, so that's another way to search. For OS 9, search for disk images with .img, or .img.sit. (some .img files are pictures images though).

I use searches for serial box to test connections, or just to find hosts to browse.

If your OS thinks a program is a document, the program is probably not much use with your set-up. You may want to save those files and check them the next time you boot into the other OS.

Cheers. If you find something that works, buy it and support Mac developers. Hope this helps you avoid downloading stuff you can't use.
