Well, first off, let's go in to what exactly your problem is? What is it exactly?

Also, stief suggested to try to start up with extensions off. That means to hold down the shift key while you're starting up. This will turn off all of your extentions. If it works then, you have an extentsion conflict, and to use Limewire, you can simply use no extensions or a very basic set, and then switch back for your normal set to do your graphics stuff.

Okay, this is what happens after I download the Limewire installer:

After launching the Limewire installer, the screen with the clock graphic comes up for a few seconds, and then this error message: "Unable to launch Java application. MRJ may not be installed correctly".
I have MRJ 2.2.5 installed.

I have tried re-installing it. I've tried different versions of the Limewire installer, but I can't even get past this point to even install it.

I tried starting up with extensions off, as suggested, and the same thing happened.

Let's try history. Did Limewire ever work? If so, can you remember what changed on your computer from when it did work, to when it didn't work?

No, I've never been able to get Limewire to work. Never even made it past the installer.

(For over a year, I've been reading through the forums about this problem, and it always dead ends, with no solution...just that "Limewire won't work on some machines.")

Salut Jottagirl, so you've passed all the troubleshooting tests without results. If I would really want to run LW with a problem that relies on an OS intallation (this is obviously the case, it happens with every OS in a few cases), personnally I would reinstall OS 9.1. This is the natural solution. Sorry, but the masters at catching os 9 bugs are gone to greener woods.... (os x). I would back up everything, format the HD, make two partitions this time (much safer to keep a computer functionnal) and I would reinstall it. Then you'll be happy and ready to share with the gnutella community If you are not ready to enter this process, I'll understand you as data loss may occur with people lacking computing skills (this is really a potential benefits vs potential losses case). Sorry I can't help you any further.

So, I should re-install my *existing* system 9.1 software, and then try installing Limewire?
Does this mean there's something corrupt within the system, or a conflict? And, re-installing would fix this?

I just want to make sure I understand what I'm doing BEFORE doing it.

Here's a thought...is there any other way to get the LW application OTHER than the downloads that need to be unstuffed, and then installed? Does it exist in any other way, any other place?

Maybe that's not the issue at all, but it does seem like the installer is the problem. Is that an obvious observation? <g>

NO you shouldn't reinstall os 9.1 on top of your existing 9.1. As you said, on mac os classic it singnifies great chances of data corruption. If you really want to have a working LW you'll have to format your hd with a prior backup as described in my previous post.

Sorry, I mis-read your earlier post--missed the part about partitioning the drive.
This is something I've never had to do, although I realize it's not that big a deal.

I've got 4 GB space on my hard drive, which should be enough, right?

What are the pros/cons of giving this a try?

Partitionning is not that easy. You have to format ALL your hard disk so it doesn't matter how much space left there is. This is what I recommend to you: find a kind mac user with backup, reformat and partitionning knowledge and ask him to help you to enter this procedure. Of course you could always do some googling to get that knowledge and do it yourself.... If you feel that extra work doesn't worth it, I recommend you to not do it as it seems to be your work machine (work may be more important than hobbying sometimes....)
