resuming searches I am using Pro version 4.5 on OS9.2. Whenever I launch Limewire, none of the files that I'm searching ever automatically resume searching. I have to go to the status window and attempt to resume the search for each one. Currently, I have about 50 such files (some partially downloaded) so this takes quite a while. Is this the way it's done? Also, I am assuming that there is no benefit to leaving Limewire open since it never searches for any of my files unless I manually do something to start that process. Is this correct? The problem with leaving it open is that eventually it will freeze and along with that freeze, I often have to restart my Mac by force qutting, something that until I began using Limewire, I had rarely ever had to do. I incur frequent errors resulting in a window asking me to copy and paste the results and email them. I've done this about 20 or so times during the past week, but there were many times (most of them, actually) that I didn't. Does anyone read these emails or is it a waste of my time? |

Those emails used to be read (I had the same question once), but like Adobe and even Apple, LW is considering dropping OS 9 support since Java has changed so much. I don't see any OS9 reports on http://bugs.limewire.com/bugs/home.jsp Still, 50 incompletes is a real burden for the OS 9's version of Java. Time to trash everything in the incomplete folder and start fresh, perhaps. Proper incompletes should automatically reattempt to connect on startup and busy hosts do sometimes become available in a few hours and start sending the file. Do you see any uploads of your files? That's the best reason to leave LW running. btw--if you're running 9.2, I think that means your machine can run Panther. |

Thanks for your response. I'm not about to trash those incompletes. It took a long time to find them. They are rare Bob Seger tunes not available in any retail store. Otherwise, I would buy them as I own everything available by Seger, thanks a lot to being able to first hear the stuff as a result of using this program. Only two or three people, as best I can determine, actually have them but they seem to be selfish or stingy so I only get a small piece of each one IF they are online and, IF I'm lucky. Still, it's worth it to me. Actually,. there are 15 songs but some of them, for whatever reason, must be slightly different because there are 2 or 3 of them, "named" a little different so they show up as different files. As I said, I just would like to be able to do something, whatever that something is, to keep the search going without have to relaunch. Uploads? Yes, a lot of people know of my Seger collection, so I get hit quite a lot and understand your point about sharing but not at the expense of crashing my machine constantly. |

I know what you mean by hating to give up on some rare partial incompletes. However, if the downloads.dat or .bak file has become corrupted, they will never resume (and I *think* will show as red). Still, you can cut down on the 50: delete all the 0KB incompletes from the Library->Incomplete folder: that should help reduce the error messages and the number of threads LW is trying to keep active. Another trick that can sometimes help cut down on the number of restarts is to delete the files from the downloads pane, and then resume them from the Library->Incomplete Pane (I figure you've likely tried this one already . . . ). Sounds like those one or two sources must be as busy as you. Re the file names: As long as a file has a 'hash' that is identical, the name of the file is irrelevant. So, if you see several files that look to be almost identical, LW will see them as differrent if they differ by even 1 bit. We probably couldn't notice a difference if they were media files, but . . . cheers--good luck. If you get a chance, try starting with a clean incomplete folder, but backing up the old one first. If that doesn't help, you can aways revert to the old one. |

Jordan, to keep LW from freezing, if you have over 320mb of real RAM installed, increase LW preferred memory by 300% & then rebuild your desktop using Techtool Lite. This should stop the freezing. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18278 Mac OS: Assigning More Memory to an Application Program. Techtool Lite |

OK that sounds like good advice so I just increased preferred memory from 2048 to 6500. I rebuild my desktop regularly and also use DiskWarrior every couple of weeks or so. Will post an update about this later when I've had a chance to see if this helps. Thanks for tip. |

"Will post an update about this later when I've had a chance to see if this helps." Here's the update: I don't seem to have as many freezes as before but can't say for sure yet. What I do have is a lot of those internal errors and I mean quite a lot of them and also get messages implying that I'm not connected to the Internet when I am. Sometimes this goes away and other times, I have to restart, and I mean restart my Mac not just Limewire. I just rebuilt the desktop in both my Imac G3/600Mhz and my TiBook/G4/400Mhz and then used Disk Warrior to replace the directories....normal maintenance stuff but that doesn't seem to have stopped those internal errors. However, I do now have the updated Pro version thanks to someone who cared enough about my not getting any response from Limewire. Given the new features, I can live with the probems but it would sure be nice to know if there is a fix. Thanks again to both Bootylicious and stief for your help. I also removed some of those incompletes...or at least variations of them. |

I have cable so I never have "connection" problems. Since it appears you have dialup, check your phone lines if you are still experiencing connection problems. TIP: Set your email client to check for emails every 5 minutes. This will trick your ISP to stay connected. |

I would check w/your ISP to make sure the problem is not on their end. Maybe, they can "ping" your modem. |
