Varying volume on burned tracks.

Anyone know how to fix the (hugely!)varying sound volume levels on tracks burned on to a CD?

Get iTunes. It has a Volume control function which automatically adjusts the volumes of all the songs burned into the CD to about the same level.

Yeah, I know. The Sound Check option doesn't seem to make that great of a difference, huh?
Well, if it really is that bad, then maybe you should get some kind of audio processing audio and adjust the overall volumes of each individual .mp3 before burning them using your usual CD burning software.

I'm not sure about iTunes but some mp3 players only adjust volume (such as normalization) for their own playback! (it's an artificial volume adjustment.) I'm not sure about an mp3 player that does a true volume adjustment. The other alternative is to normalize it or the tracks in a full-bodied audio editor. It 'might' mean the need to convert your audio files to aiff/wav depending on your particular brand of audio editor. But doing this might lead to loss of some quality by the time you convert it back to mp3. Unless of course it's not an mp3 disk you want in which case any non mp3 audio-editor should be able to do the job. Personally I use Peak, SoundEdit II & Jam for these purposes. There's plenty of decent audio editors around! Sorry I can't advise about mp3 players that do a legitimate job to solve your issue.

I forgot to mention, some audio editors such as Peak & Pro Tools can import mp3's directly (but might not be able to save as mp3's.) There is a free version of Pro Tools for OS 9 if you visit the Digidesign website. It's a decent program particularly considering it's free & can even edit movie soundtracks. It only accepts a few 3rd party plug-ins unless you get the full version. Pro Tools is a little different from the average & you might take a while to adjust to it. But it can handle up to 24 bit audio!
