How much iTunes Song Info Can Others See?

This has probably been answered, so maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

Usually I name all the songs I import using iTunes by the title of the album, not the song. (Don't worry, I'm not sharing these songs until I know more about how they will be understood by other users!) In other words, a song by Fictionalband on the album Example Album will likely be named "Example5" if it's track 5, or maybe Fic_Example_5." This is so that if my iTunes Library file gets corrupted I don't have to go through 5,000,000 songs and guess who composed them and what album they're from just by looking at the title.

Anyway, if all these songs also contain iTunes information like "artist" and "album," but ONLY in the "artist" and "album" section in iTunes and NOT anywhere you can see it if you view the file on your desktop and click "get info," can other people with Macs using LimeWire see this information and can LimeWire and other Gnutella people with Windows see any of this information?

In case I'm not being clear, what I mean is, there's tons of cool information about songs in iTunes, but if you take a song and drag and drop it onto your desktop so it's seen as an MP3 file, and you control-click the file and "get info," there's really not a lot of information there, even if you go in comments. I'm just wondering if this extra information you see in iTunes is somehow stored somewhere and I'm wondering what I need to do to my songs so other people can know everything about them.

I'm sort of assuming other people will be able to see all my info if it's all added at the last second using iTunes but I don't know who and how! Actually I don't even know how LimeWire gets its information about songs initially, and I don't know which forum I should be searching in.

I'm going to do more research and remove this post if I can find more. Like I keep saying as my "excuse," I don't know if I know enough to know all the right keywords to search for.

Thanks and TTYL

This is all about mp3 id tags. When you locate mp3's in your LW searches, & you hover your cursor over the top of the song, magical details appear about it's title, artist, year, etc.
iTunes has the ability to add a number of tags (just click in the particular area twice but not too quickly & you'll be able to add the info you want to.) iTunes is a little disappointing in some ways b/c it doesn't always display all the info that an mp3 has in its id tags. I find the use of other mp3 players better for displaying all the info & also for adding info. My favourite for the mac is MP3 Rage. You can add a large no. of details including album covers, etc. And an alternative player & encoder is Audion 3. Audion has more codecs than iTunes & can play some mp3's that iTunes can't.

Not everybody adds mp3 tags or adds accurate details. I find I need to fix many details up. For those who don't add tags they just put the artist & title in the mp3's file name.

There's different types & versions of id tags for mp3's. The later the version, the more the details you can add (more letters also). Some mp3 softwares around can not recognise the most recent versions of tags. So some people add tags in an intermediate tag version so most if not all people will be able to access that info.

I downloaded MP3 Rage but I've been too busy to have any fun with it. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks!

MP3 Rage Tags Don't Show Up?

I did a bunch of tag stufff with MP3 Rage and none of it showed up in LimeWire when I looked at my files in my LimeWire library! Any ideas? Exactly what I did was add artist and album tags.

:o)

That's a tricky one. I'm sure you Refreshed the library right (Refresh button)? All my mp3 Rage added details show up fine when viewing from LW Library. That includes album, etc. & comments.

Thanks Lord Of the Rings

Better late than never! :o) I can't remember what happened with this but apparently it's been taken care of because I don't hear myself whining! :o)

Ignore what I said about encoding id tag info with iTunes b/c I was wrong. In iTunes you select the tune in the list & CMD+I for Get info (or select it under File menu) & you'll see the id options!
