Using Limewire on a Mac
 

Hi,

Im using the latest Mac version of Limewire on my new Ibook. I was able to install it and everything just fine, but when I open Limewire and go to finder on my mac, it says "limewire has unexpectedly quit because of an error type 2. I am using a ethernet connection. Can anyone please help me out. Thanks a lot

A type 2 error on a mac means you have run out of memory. Have you tried running Limewire when you first start your computer? If that does not help, try turning off some extensions or programs that automatically load when you startup.

Also, you may try allocating 40 or more megabytes of RAM to LimeWire. You should only do this is you've got a larger than average amount of RAM. I think you can hold the control key and click the application shortcut and tell it how much to allocate. I don't have a Mac to test this with, so I cannot tell you for sure if this will work. Others have done this and seen improvement or a complete fix of the problem.

also try turning virtual memory off, which is supposed to be when running limewire.

I think the recommended allotment is 64 MB for LimeWire on a Mac. I upgraded my memory so I've had no (well, let's just say less) problems with it running. I still have problems running other apps at the same time though. But, I'd give it as much as you can afford.

The error type 2 is because of your fax software.
you need to go to extensions manager and disble all extensions with the suffix ".stf" then when you click on you finder it will not quit. if you use this software you will need to put the extensions back on when needed.
Tip: save extensions as limewire settings when making a duplicate.

1) The error is not because of the faxware. Those extensions cause LW to crash without an error message whenever the top menu bar is used. If you never send faxes, then it is best to disable it. Unlike most extensions in 9.x, disabling these will actually decrease the RAM the sys software uses.

2) Throwing tons of memory at LW is a useless waste of computer resources. Version after version, I have not touched the minimum/recommended amounts and LW runs fine -- well, for a Java app. You might increase the RAM by a small amount, but 40 or 64 will not increase LW's stability or performance. Remember that LW runs on top of Java, which requires about 50 MB, depending on available RAM.

3) If other apps are quitting because of Error 2, you need to run diagnostic software.

4) Reinstall MRJ (Java for Mac) from the Apple site. Then use the "Javaless" (no VM) LW installer you can find at limewire.com (It's in the small print, you have to search for it).

BTW: Shortcuts are called aliases on the Mac, and while they can be used to open apps, also drag and drop, they cannot be used to increase memory. To increase memory, you simply highlight the icon of the app, hit apple+i and go from there.

As for the "Javaless", I've seen something in the "fine print" for Linux or Unix or something like that, but for Mac? Does it work better? Less memory eating? Why is the sky blue?
Oh ~ sorry to sound like a curious three year old, but this is the first time I've heard any of this in these forums... ;) ;)

There is a "Javaless" download for Mac in the small print, but LW cannot run without Java. There is simply no reason to download the full install if you already have the latest MRJ. It makes no sense for this to be the primary Mac download for Limewire anyway.

I think I may have upped LW's memory allotment to 10 or so, but the whole thing takes up around 50 MB. The Java portion of that is likely proportional to total available RAM. I don't use virtual memory.

I think the sky is blue because of the refraction of light. ;)
