Default limewire w/ type 2 error message

ok, i'm running a 9.2.2 on a fresh rebulit desktop, updated MRJ to 2.2.6, and each time i try to fire up limewire it pops up the type 2 error message exactly after i try to open it.

even tried a fresh restart, still no dice. one option i haven't tried is extensions off, but that would conflict with isp wouldn't it?

any ideas people?

just a suggestion: look for an Extension conflict with any extension that adds a menu item to the system. For example, there was a version of FaxStf fax software that triggered a conflict once upon a time . . .

(sorry--I'm really out of touch with OS 9, so if you track this down, please post back a solution to help others)

well, you're on the right track about that whole extension thing, i couldn't install it as is, then, the program ran w/o extensions. but i'm not too sure what or where the extension problem is.

people, you sure you don't know?

This might help: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...8426#post98426

Error 2 is generally related either directly or indirectly with a memory issue.

ok, transfer folder to ram disk, tried opening still no dice, not even the type 2 error message. and i had set aside 12mb for this ram disk

if i knew what extension to disable i would. but i'm not sure which one is causing the conflict.

Finding an extension conflict can be a 'pain!' I know there are utilities out there that can find them. If you also run OSX I wouldn't recommend Conflict Catcher. It gave me hell by deleting system files I didn't realise it was deleting (had to reinstall osx.) Another that could do it (strangely), was a font program I had on my old 7200 series comp. It had a no. of xtra abilities & that one seemed to be reliable (I've got a mind block for its name.) Alternatively you could try your general file & disk utilities.

But other than that is the very testy process of setting up custom extension sets with just the minimum (plus any mandatory net extensions - but not the fax ones.) Seeing how that goes. Then each time adding one or a handful more extensions to the list each time to try to find which extension that might be causing the problem. It could even be a control panel. Particularly if it belongs to an older version.

Which browser softwares do you use & what's their versions? Check out for any softwares on your comp that may have been set to run under OS 8 or earlier. These can sometimes be the culprits. Norton Utilities can sometimes detect that type of issue.

You use a ram disk!? How much ram do you have? Virtual memory can be helpful when you're short of physical ram, but there's nothing like having true physical ram. VM such as ram disks can have side-fx. Everything tends to run slower for a start. Particularly if your HDD is an old one.

i have 192mb hard ram, then 200mb virtual memory.

yeah that extension problem does sound rather difficult, but as i said before, with the extensions off, i can launch the installer, and the program, but since there's no internet connection it's rather useless.

using os 9 in this day and age is rather ancient, and hard to find people who know what's going on.

Most of the older mac computers used the equivalent type of ram to pc's. If you know of any old ones sitting around you might be able to increase your ram somewhat. 192 MB is not a lot for OS9.

Why not set up your own custom extension set. Include only the net extensions as suggested. Let's get the thing connected without issue for a start. You do know how to do this don't you? LW doesn't use extensions or control panels. A Preferences folder is the only item that gets put into the System folder. In list mode you'll find it at the top of the list called [b].limewire[b] It might be an idea to trash this folder whilst LW is closed before you proceed.

What type of connection do you have? Might I suggest you disable Ultrapeer capabilities. Go to LW's menu Tools>Options>Speed & tick Disable up cap. & press the Apply button.

Just for a start, have minimal shared folders. Say with a total of no more than 50 files. When I used LW in OS 9 a couple of weeks ago, it took forever to load the shared folders (over 2 hrs.) Whereas in OSX it takes about 10 mins for more shared files.

Um.. you 'might' also try going to Tools>Options>Advanced>Compression & ticking both the options & pressing the Apply button.

Hope the image below helps. The Speed>UP setting is from OSX so it'll look a bit different. The Tools>Options>... is where to find these items. Tick the Disable ...Compression & press Apply button for changes to take immediate effect.

well, ok, if i can actually open the program i'm good. so all of those settings are a good idea and all, but the program won't open unless i kick off the ext.

i'm on a cable modem, so i don't think program settings will be that big of a deal.

the program opens with extensions off. meaning no v-mem or any of that.
a type 2 error message comes up and now with the system functions down to a minimum internet only, it still has a type 2 message

oh and i rebuilt the desktop just to be sure.

so to be honest, i don't know what's really going on. and os 9 is so outdated, anyone got os X i can use? :-P lol

Your Virtual Memory is set too high!

Bring it down to 193mb & get rid of the Ram Disk.
Rebuild your desktop using TechTool Lite.

Virtual memory should not be set over 1mb over your real RAM.
