Not sure if this has been addressed before, but I can't find anything about it.

I'm running LimeWire Classic for Mac, version 3.0.1, and recently I started having a problem. While searching for music, a dialog box would pop up and announce an error. After this point, I can search for *anything* -- including the word "the" -- and absolutely NO results will be returned.

Through trial and error I narrowed this down and determined that specific searches prompted this error -- which meant somebody was purposely sending my LimeWire crap to disable it. (Try typing in "Lou Reed Street Hassle" for a *really* quick demonstration.)

First, I just wanted to alert people who are getting the same error, because it confused me for weeks. Second, I'd really like a solution for this. I emailed the Bug Report address, but never heard. Has it been fixed? Is there a workaround?

Your version is quite old. LW for OS 9 is up to 4.1.0 now.

I did the search (81 results) & one person had 2 files listed at 384 kbps which is strange since the normal max of mp3 & m4a is 320 kbps. I haven't had any side-fx however. I wouldn't trust the 384! Corrupt for sure. I searched "the" & did get various results.

Perhaps you should delete your LW preferences folder called .limewire whilst LW is closed (make a note of your settings 1st.)

I hate updating my software -- it always seems to screw up -- so I only wanted to do this if I knew for sure the bug was fixed.

Just wanted to clear something up: this has nothing to do with actually *downloading* a song. I start LimeWire, search for ONE song, and get this error -- sometimes before ANY results are listed. Somebody sees that I'm searching for certain material and sends me a message that causes LimeWire to experience this error. (I'm guessing they learned this capability by examining the source code and exploiting defects, like Windows virus writers.)

This error TOTALLY disables all further searches. Nothing is returned for ANY search after this point (as I said, even for "the" or "and" or "Madonna"), and I have to restart to get the available songs to list again. (Needless to say, it's a little frustrating.)

Nope, I don't. I already have Java problems and don't want to compound them by adding extra stuff.

Hey, I just had a thought. Can you email me the IP address of the guy with the obviously corrupt files? I could filter out his address and maybe that would stop the bug (at least for that song search).

If an error is popping up, it's probably because LimeWire is broken. If you update, it'll probably be fixed.

Actually, I'd like to know if the bug was fixed, because if it wasn't, then I'd just as soon not update. I checked the fixed bug list but it's pretty much imcomprehensible.

I'm assuming the bug *wasn't* fixed, because if everybody's updated to a fixed version of LimeWire, why would somebody be targeting old versions?

One of the main reasons I posted here was to ask if anybody else running LimeWire on a Mac experienced this problem. Anybody?

I run macs. I generally use OSX for LW but the previous occasion I started up in OS9 & used LW would have been January. I had no problems searching & downlding.

Okay, you've convinced me. I'll upgrade. One last question (that may sound stupid, but I just want to make sure): do I need to uninstall the old LimeWire before installing the new one? I run the uninstaller?
