Default Won't Start Up with 9.0.4

Yeah I know I've got a stone age OS (9.0.4), but Limewire used to work with only some problems. But one day months ago, it simply would not start up. It would go through all of the opening screens but before it would get to the main window, the program would quit, and I would either get an error message or nothing at all.

I tried downloading the newest OS 9 version, tried giving it 64 MB of RAM (via virtual memory unfortunately), but nothing seems to work.

After reading a few posts with Lord of the Rings' questions, I'll just answer them now with the hopes he or someone else can help:

--When I go to http://www3.limewire.com:6346/, nothing happens. It simply times out.

--I'm using OS 9.0.4
--No firewalls
--I have 64MB actual RAM, and I have Virtual Memory set at 85MB
--I have 5 GB hard disk space available
--Dialup connection
--Modem type is whatever standard modem Apple installed in it's iMacs from 2000
--Connecting from home
--I have Limewire 4.0.7 (or whatever the latest version is....I d/led it on 7/24/05) and my MRJ is 2.5.5
--I have a local ISP provider
--I am an experienced user, and LW has always been pretty janky on my computer but never this bad.

I hope that covers everything and thanks in advance for any help. I miss Limewire!!

hmm you could search the forum, but I believe you already did that I'd like to help, but the only thing I can say is that I have an iMac of summer 2000 and it is much happier using 10.3 or 10.4, and you should do the same if you've got over 256mb ram. Désolé/sorry

My recommendations:

1. Follow the steps to update to OS 9.2.2: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288

2. Then update your Java using these steps: (a) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75097 & (b) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209

3. Delete your Limewire preferences whilst LW is closed found here: MacIntosh HD>System folder>Preferences & arrange it by name & you'll find .limewire folder at the top. Send this folder to the trash & delete. Then re-open LW.

4. Consider updating to the latest OS 9 version of LW here 4.0.10 here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

* Consider upgrading to OSX. It starts up faster, if progs crash it doesn't affect the system at all, etc. Many advantages. Just takes time to adjust that's all.

Great! Thanks for the tips! It's nice to have a direction to go in rather than be completely baffled...

I wasn't going to bother upgrading to OS X until I bought a new comp. with Tiger already on it, esp. since I only have 64 MB of RAM...but in the meanwhile, I'll do what LOTR suggests and see how that goes.

Thanks!
