Strange Problem. Well, to me this is a strange problem. I myself do not run a mac, however my friend wanted me to fix limewire. Seeing as I don't use Itunes, or a mac, I'm having troubles. Here I will explain. First off, my friend installed Limewire, however, it simply turned itself into a file folder on her desktop. Ok, first off it did not have the green circle (Limewire desktop item) which was odd. Secondly, and this really is the important part, when you double click on the desktop item, it automaticly opens Itunes. At the start I was thinking she simply installed it incorrectly, thus I tried it again myself. Sure enough same result. :bangh: I didn't have long to work on this problem, but I thought I may aswell find out what the problem is while my friend is away. Anyways, If some one could give me a reason why this is happening (for learning purposes) and instructions how to fix this problem. Plz make instrctions very clear ... I'm not a Mac user myself. Thanks alot :) |
Did she download the program using Explorer? If yes, then that's why there's a problem. Explorer is not 100% OSX compatible & can't handle dmg files properly. So tell her to use Safari (found in the applications folder) to download LW, http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml The same problem happens to others who use explorer to download dmg files, but the file becomes an incomplete download. The system isn't sure how to handle the file & associates it with another program on the computer. |
Haha, funny you should bring that up actualy ... another weird prob she has is her Internet Explorer doesn't work. Thus she's already using Safari. (Not sure what's wrong with her internet either, hehe) |
Must be something else then. Sure she is using OSX? Which system version is it? What you describe will happen if you control-click an osx program & choose show contents. Normally after installing updates or programs one should do a SAFE start & repair permissions. SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions |
Alright, to be honest I'm not sure, seems bit confusing but, I'll ask her. If you need that information, then thankyou thus far, and I'll ask her as soon as I can. ( Mac's confuse me, alot, lol  ) |
Alright everyone, the problem has been fixed. Thanks for all of your help. Lord Of The Rings turned out to be right. so again, thanks everyone. And she says she loves you all:idea: thanks, once again. |
Thanks for letting us know. ;) :) |
Ok, completly different and random question, however, just out of sheer curiosity, (and for learning purposes), when it says a file is currupted, what exactly does that mean? a Virus enlodged in the file? Anyone care to explain? |
Depends what type of file it is. It means that the hash file that was initially downloaded at the time you chose to download it, doesn't agree with the final file. This can be for numerous reasons. eg: someone changes the id3 tag of an mp3 after you chose to downlded it, or gave a file a description or different description to what you are downlding. So it doesn't necessarily mean the file is corrupt. But it might be. Best thing is to continue & see if the file is ok after all. Corrupt can also mean there's some missing bits or bytes, or the file was damaged in some way during transfering such as due to an aggressive firewall or anti-virus utility, etc. Or that there was data that was misplaced during transer. |
Hm... Ok thanks, so your saying if a file says it has been currupted, there's a chance if I attempted to download it agagin, it may work? If so, niffty. Thanks again :) |
Are you getting a message saying it's corrupted, or is it stopping downloading & it lists it as corrupted. If the latter, go to LW's prefs, & change Popups back to default. I was suggesting keeping downlding it rather than not continuing with it |
2nd one. stops downloading & lists file as currupted. And ok, sounds good. Once again, thanks. and it wasn't so much an actual problem. It happens from time to time. I asked more or less out of curiosity. Trying to educate myself with computers alot latley :D |
You know where to find the popups option right? |
Well, no. Im still kinda looking for it. "LW's prefs" where is Limewire prefs? ... tools? filters? Little confused to be honest. |
You are using the Mac version right?! If yes, hold down both the apple command key & comma (⌘ ,). It's the same for all OSX programs. Manually you can find it under the LimeWire title at the top left corner of the screen next to the apple icon. And it will be under View. ie: Prefs->View->Popups |
O danm. well isn't this a stupid mistake of mine. I'm still in the Mac support forums. My mistake sorry, I am running a PC. I soupose I should go post this question in a Pc support section, huh?:p |
Ah ... thought you were still talking about your friend's mac version. Ok, LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>View>Popups & tick the option for Revert to Default & press apply. |
Alright, done. Thanks once again. :D |
woah! woah ... ok. Another prob, it's on a P.C but I may aswell post it here because you (Lord of the Rings) seem to know everything:p I just updated Limewire ... Not mch to say, I used to have a ton of songs ... 500+ I presume .. Just updated and now I have 50 or so. where did they all go and how can I recover them ? |
