Default error 2, then quits

I used to have Limewire17 on my computer, then I deleted (uninstalled) the program, now I downloaded LimeWire to the same computer, my PowerBook G4 (128 MEGS). I have installed and uninstalled the program several times, because when i tried to open it doesn´t work. I went to the help menu and I gave it more memory as it`s shown there, I assigned 2048 min an 4096 max, also my virtual mem is on, but the problem is still there... the program doesn´t open, just appears the first window for a long time, then it quits giving me the message that error 2 happened... please help to solve this problem. Thanks a lot. rnoboaf@interactive.net.ec

Default type 2 error

I have found that if I increase the amout of memory available to a program I will no longer get type 2 errors. Currently I am running 1.7 on an iMac w/ 9.2.2OS . I have given Limewire 5meg of memory to use.

Angry Help! I keep receiving Type 2 Error Messages

I'm using Limeware 2.0 on a Powerbook G4 with 256 Ram using OS 9.1. I keep increasing the memory, but the program still crashes...even at 20MB! Also, it screws up the Apple Menu and Apple Menu Prefs. Please Help!!!

Angry Type 2 Errors in 2.0 with OS9.2.2

Using OS9.2.2 and both Limewire Mac 2.0 and 2.05 beta (I tried one for a few days and then the other), and having installed the latest MRJ 2.2.5 from Apple (after having no success with the 2.2.5 that is included with Limewire) I STILL get Type 2 errors. I also increased my memory allocated to Limewire to 100 mb! I even kept the About This Computer window open so I could see a spike in memory. I will say, it did something I've NEVER seen a Mac Application do... Limewire kept increasing the amount of memory it was taking. By the time it crashed with a Type 2 error again, it had allocated 149 mb to itself (49mb OVER the max limit I had set to allow it). It also had only been using a third of it when it crashed (only - LOL). So there wasn't any sort of spike in memory that went over the limit.

There is something *very* wrong with an application that continues to take more and more memory, even past the amount that is allocated to it. I can only imagine how this impacts the system and other applications overall. I hope that this is something Limewire plans to improve. Until then, I'm going to go back to the 1.8c I found a link to on this forum.

LimeWire does use a lot of memory. It will immediately want to grab about 30 megs since MRJ wants that much. Then I'll notice as time goes by the LimeWire memory usage continues to increase at least past 50 megs until my memory is so fragmented I need to restart LimeWire. I have 192 megs of RAM. Turning on virtual memory might reduce memory usage.

Also, LimeWire and many other apps will as necessary grab temporary memory that is not specifically assigned to it in Get Info. Applications can use this special memory to open really large documents without having to change memory settings. When the document is closed the memory needs be released. LimeWire might be opening large documents for uploads and downloads but when the transfers are done or whatever it is doing the temporary memory needs to be released.

This problem in general is also called a memory leak, when an application doesn't give back memory that it no longer needs. Memory leaks prevent LimeWire from running for long periods of time without restarting.

I noticed for LimeWire that when I increase the memory allocation in Get Info the added amount is assigned to the application but it isn't actually used (at least right away). The added memory functions more as a buffer.

Default A Temporary Fix

I went back to Limewire 1.8c Mac and realized that it crashes too. However, I can keep it running virtually forever if I do not access any of the menus at the top of the screen (Apple, File, Help, etc.). It's kind of annoying but worth it. Also, Limewire 1.8c seems to allow access to FAR more files than 2.0. I wonder why the heck that is. LOL. Aren't upgrades supposed to be better? I have 2.0 on the PC laptop and 1.8c on the Mac and I get far more files on 1.8c.

According to the FAQ, this has been fixed in version 2.0 and above. Both I and my roommate can assure you it has not been fixed.

Workaround for type 2 errors, specifically menu bar crashes, is in this thread. (Click directly on the link on that page, don't copy and paste what you see).
