i finally managed to get limewire 'installed' (i paved my hard drive first). only...upon launching the program, a dialog box comes up stating

any theories? i'm further ahead of this than i was before, but still not up and running. install log attached in case it's helpful.

This sounds like the ZeroG installer doesn't like your version of Mac OS. I wish I could test this theory out, but I can't (don't have a Mac here ). Is there any way you could test it out on another version of Mac OS?

unfortuneately, no. the only other OS i have about is 7.1, which, last i checked, is not sufficient for limewire.

the installer seemed quite happy working on a fresh OS 8.1 install on a paved hard drive. the problem appears to be in launching limewire after installation, although it's possible the installation was botched. the log file reported only two non-fatal errors involved with creating icons for the desktop shortcuts.

perhaps limewire is not compatible with OS 8.1 anymore?

Search for LimeWire.lax or something similar. If you can find it, try executing it. If this file executes LimeWire properly, try creating a shortcut to it on your desktop.

nope. limewire17.lax is a simpletext file. doubleclicking it reveals it to be some kind of list of parameters or instructions. however, i do have limewire up and running after some serious finagling, and i'm nervous about how long it can remain so.

i re-installed the OS from scratch (AGAIN), installed Limewire 1.7, and it worked - until i started restoring my preferences and extensions. installer observer didn't indicate that any files (visible or invisible) had been created in my preferences (except for alladin's stuffit expander) that i might have overwritten; my extensions folder showed MRJ items installed, so i didn't overwrite those. no invisible files discovered there, either.

so i reinstalled the OS (AGAIN! i'm getting proficient at it) and have been taking very careful notes. i'm replacing the standard extensions with their patches one by one and keeping the old versions handy. it appears to be working fine for the past two hours, but i can't count how many times i've re-booted to test if a change has broken limewire.

i'm curious - where would ZGNativeUtilLib (presumably a java class) be located? does the installer modify a standard macintosh extension, thus making it hard to visibly track the changes it makes?

I am not that proficient when it comes to Macs, unfortunately. (I'm a linux/windows guy) I know that lax files are used by ZeroG to launch a Java app. The only other thing I could think of would be to look for an app called LimeWire in your install directory. It is probably made by ZeroG (which uses the lax file). But it sounds like things are working out over there for you.

I'm not sure what to think of Mac File extensions. Are they similar to Windows file extensions (eg .png files open with Quicktime)?
If you'd take the time to explain this to me, I'd be very thankful!

As for the Java location, I've been told that Java can only reside in one place on the Mac. You can't choose where to install it like you can on other platforms like Windows.

When you find out exactly which extension you restore causes the problem, be sure to post or PM and let me know. That way, other users will be able to solve the problem you're having.

In theory Mac file extensions are completely unnecessary. In reality a number of applications prefer them and in some cases require it. The way it is supposed to work is every file and application has a type and creator code. The explanation below applies to the classic Mac OS as I am not sure how Mac OS X associates files with applications.

Suppose you have a JPEG image. The type code of this file would be "JPEG" and the creator code would determine what application will open this JPEG. A creator code of "ogle" would open with PictureViewer (QuickTime) while a code of "MSIE" would open with IE. Applications have type codes of "APPL" and the creator code is the same the code assigned to the files that open in that particular application ("ogle","MSIE",...).

The rationale behind type and creator codes, which are normally hidden from the user, is files can be named anything and they will always open in the proper application.

I've heard that Mac OS X will change the creator/type codes when you change the extension. Can anyone verify this?

getting much closer to fully restored. my original suspicion (that changing from the installed QuickTime version 2.5 to version 4.0 was the dealbreaker) is unfounded. my system is almost completely restored. i've been very careful to NEVER replace files, instead i'm moving them to archival folders on the same disk and putting the later versions in their former place. tedious, but it IS progressing. limewire keeps on going. and yes, if i find out what file is essential to not be disturbed, i'll be posting.

I'm having the same trouble now that freaq was, only without having installed anything recently. LimeWire was working fine a couple of days ago, and now it won't run-- same 'ZGUtilLib Couldn't be found' error. I'm running OS 9.2.2 Any ideas? I've already tried reinstalling LimeWire-- the installer won't even open!
