Some downloads won't invoke StuffIt Expander

Using LimeWire 2.1.1 and MacOS 9.1. Some downloads appear in Finder as LimeWire documents rather than StuffIt Expander documents. Of these, some can be expanded via drag'n'drop to Stuffit Expander or expanded from withing the StuffIt application, but others are ignored completely by StuffIt and merely launch LimeWire if double-clicked. Any clues?

Are the .img files?

If so they may be decoded with disk copy.
