If you didnīt read it already:

http://www.edonkey2000.com/documenta...aq_faster.html

You should set the max connetions to 200 (or more depends on your OS and your line). The more connections you can use the faster the download will be. You should also increase the number of max sources to 200 (or more depends on your OS and line), the more sources you have the higher is the chance of getting a free slot - this increases the speed.

This was the short guide.

Well, that big file I mentioned is 92.68% downloaded, but I'm a bit baffled by all the jargon in the eDonkey help pages.

Perhaps you can help - you seem both a knowledgeable and helpful kinda person.

1) I do not have the green eDonkey icon at the top of my screen. Does this mean that my access to the network(s) is somehow restricted? Is this a Mac thing (I did notice that the Mac version is still a Beta)?

2) I'm currently 'unreachable'. Having checked all the stuff in the section on the site about making myself 'reachable' I'm non the wiser. I have single machine here at home using an Airport Extreme and an Ethernet ADSL modem. I have never come across any firewall settings either in my Mac (running OS X 10.2.8) or in the modem/router configuration. I have checked my speed using BandwithPlace. This gives me a speed of 320.6. I've tried changing the port to 80 as suggested, but this has had no effect.

Thanks

Your modem may well use nat or similar. Nat restricts most incoming ports. NAT stands for network address translation, a system which lets you share an Internet connection among many computers while allowing for unique IP addresses for each computer. Many DSL and Cable modem switches use NAT. Apple's Airport uses NAT. If you're using a switch box to share your internet connection with many computers or are accessing the internet via a wireless connection, you may be using NAT and will not be able to share files. At least with modems/routers you can use port forwarding which opens up ports for particular purposes usch as gaming, video conferencing, p2p use, etc.

Lord of The Rings,

Thanks for your reply.

I am using both Airport and a ADSL Ethernet modem/router, but I am able to 'share' files.

I've been using Limewire but got fed up with it and have started to try out eDonkey. I'm able to download files and it looks as though I'm uploading them too (while they are downloading) it's just that the status bar on my eDonkey screen ssays that I'm unreachable.

Does this NAT thing mean that I'll not be able to increase my download speeds (currently about 3 kbps against an upload of about 29 kbps)?

I'm a wee bit baffled. This eDonkey thing although it may be a far wider network, seems to require a great deal more individual machine by machine tweaking (and therefore technie know how)...

I haven't tried eDonkey as of yet. You could try an eDonkey specific forum such as here: http://www.p2pconsortium.ipbhost.com...p?showforum=42 If you can speak German you can go here: http://www.emule-web.de/board/archiv...et_kdrive.html

Not a greatly visited forum - the last (and only visible) post was almost two weeks ago and nobody has replied to that!

Does eDonkey use the Gnutella network, or is it a network in it's own right? I'm really starting to show my ignorance here aren't I?

eDonkey doesn't use Gnutella, it has a network of it's own. In fact, it has a second one I think, and eMule has another one as well. Am I correct?

eDonkey is connecting to the donkey network, eMule is connecting to the donkey network and has created a new net called kadmelia. The eDonkey developers also created an own network Overnet which you can reach with the so called client, Overnet is also able to connect to the donkey net.
