Default How RIAA can get you using Limewire

When you try to download a file from LimeWire it gives you the option to open up a chat window with the person you are downloading the file from. This window identifies the person by their IP address. It seems to me that the RIAA could get you for song swapping this way. Any thoughts about this?

jimmyhyatt

Whenever you go on the internet your IP address is logged on the servers you surf and, likewise, on the P2P PCs you download from or upload to.

The RIAA can capture your IP address if you come to their notice.

Stay below their radar.

also don't get the risk out of proportion from normal everyday ones, that most of us seem oblivious to. Saftey in numbers plays a part. After all, the lions don't get all te gazell do they?

I guess what I dont understand is why is Limewire so popular if the RIAA can do to it exactly what they did to Napster? It just seems inevitable that they will issue lawsuits on Limewire and then it will get shut down...

I think that jimmyhyatt has missed a main point and that is LW, as an application, is perfectly legal to buy/download and use.

The illegality comes in if you use it to download and redistribute copyright material without any recompense to the copyright owners.

I believe the point Peerless is making is that Napster could, by using it’s administrative control over it’s central server, stop it’s users from distributing copyright material. It did not do that so it was legally clobbered.

LW, because of the nature of P2P, has no control over what you or I do with our PCs, i.e. what products we have and share, so LW, as a company, cannot be held liable for the use we put their product to. In other words, P2P is about communication and sharing if P2P users then abuse this great tool then we have no one to blame but ourselves when the wolves come knocking.

On a more practical level, if by some means the LW software was no longer being developed users of existing installed LW and other Gnutella apps would still have a non-centralised network to use.

Hi UKBob and everyone else!!

First off I love the posts of your's, UK Bob, that I have come accross in my searches for help. They have been helpful as well as MANY others. I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS!!!!!!!!!!

Just a quick question. I am on the infringing side of p2p. Not much though, just a little. That said wondering if you have furthur advice for "staying below their radar", other then just not using Limwwire for what I came for: some music and movies.

~ The Excuse for not buying instead: I'm very poor, I work ALL the time, but I don't have a car or a tv (don't want either) and have only bought two cds in my life, no videos/DVDs and I never rent them either. Luckily I very mysteriously qualified for a credit card a year ago, which I then almost stupidly and promptly maxed out to buy the puter and pay rent ~ oops, that's one of many mistakes/reasons I'm so poor (other then sadly being a wage slave, who happens to be trying to get free of that kind of almost miserable lifestyle).

Peace

Default Staying Below the Radar

Hi wildflower

Glad you like my posts, I try to help out where I can.

Anyway, as for your question is concerned, you will get both of us into trouble if I advise you on ways to avoid detection by the authorities or copyright representatives (RIAA and MPAA).

However, if you protect PC from spyware, viruses and all the other dangers that are out there, with the necessary protective software (which is now a necessity), then your PC will be harder but not impossible to compromise.

And always remember wherever you go on the internet your IP address is left behind on every server or PC that you visit.

Search around for anonymous P2P clients then you don't have to worry so much.

Why make it easy for them to sue you?

Use the technology to bring them down!

Use the power YOU have. They are using their power, turn about is fair play.
