Very Slow Downloads

I have a cable modem. Purchased the newest version of a P2P file sharing software for 18.88 and the speed is still like I am on dial up. I have added the ports under Windows XP Firewall as instructed. Still nothing. I have a 1mbs per second transfer rate and can download files from any server on the net and get 200k a second. Only when I load my sharing software is it slow and I purchased the "TURBO". What's the secret? Anyone know? Did I miss a forum somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance:D

This sounds like a Gnutella program specific question. So which program are you refering to? Sounds like LimeWire. If you post in the incorrect section of the forum then you won't get answered simple as that! As the Sticky at the top of the forum says, post in the correct program specific section.

many users fail to see the relationship of speed on a client to server (Internet) and peer to peer.

the internet is faster because you made a request to a server who has sufficient bandwidth to send you a file. i wouldn't imagine many web servers are hosted on a dsl/cable connection.

peer to peer is slow because the people that are sending you files are on cable/dsl, which has significantly slow upload speeds. those users could be downloading off the internet, which would affect their upload speeds.

I'm using Limewire pro. The speeds depends on how many hosts have the files available. More hosts means more download speeds. I got speeds of up to 35Kbps if there are more hosts with the file I'm downloading. Also check that you don't have any 'memory hungry' programs running.
